Chris, it sounds like you are going to get under the car and do some work. You can spend time turning the crankshaft, but get under there and measure the crankshaft endplay and release the flexplate tension. Your endplay will make more of a statement regarding thrust bearing injury. See Dwayne's tutorials. They are well known here and are trusted. http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/

I think the thrust bearing check is something I should have done by a real mechanic. There's a local mechanic who owns a shark and I may have to just ship it to him. I had no knowledge of the thrust bearing issue...I have an '81 and an '80...both 16V euros. Do I need to worry about this issue with those cars too?

I hear it more COMMON in the later model automatics, but the design anomaly is present in all autos. It is a very simple check. It is a very simple 'fix'. If these cars are autos, why wouldn't keep them safe ? See Dwayne's write up.
