Default Hatch release.

I am working on a local fellows 928 (WaltL),

Its a 1982 and he wanted to have the hatch release. But I personally really dont like the factory hatch release motors to say the least. Especially at $150 or so.

So I was looking for something different to actuate it. Then I was helping get the back working on a friends car and something caught my eye......

So off I went to the junkyard and pulled two of the little boxes that got my attention.

The box is on all Mark III VW Golfs. It is in the hatch and is used to release the hatch.

It comes with a long black plastic bar which I used as well.

Long story short, the install is uber simple, and works like a charm.
I did this in both my S4, as well as Walters car. Walt's car has a worn hatch receiver bushing (used S4 part), and it still works perfectly.

This shows it all wired in and connected to a (freshly installed) keyfob. The keyfob also locks and unlocks the doors.

DUDE!

and it's still got that Teutonic dna.

The 928 hatch motor (which is identical to the door lock motors but with a different application, at least in the S3s) is just another example of an overdesigned assembly that is asking for trouble. The motor has plastic gears in it that can sheer off teeth, it's prone to corrosion inside on the motor armature and the contact points and is just generally asking for an upgrade.

Colin - I like the idea - the 928 hatch release was another B-Team effort...

I always thought a simple solenoid with a lever drive would be sufficient - far simpler and cheaper.

Is the VW one still a motor type? can you post a picture of how it looks installed (behind tool tray).
