I just used a dremel to cut off the plastic part of the connector on the bottom and soldered leads directly to the metal tabs that I strove not to cut off.
Me too! No need to break the whole case apart. But I did take out the terminal block and soldered extended wire pigtails to the stock wires (w/ heat shrink). Then I drilled holes for the new wires in the case side & potted the open area with JB weld. Ends up looking pretty nice & is very secure, in-line connector on the end of the pigtail.
I tried this mod. Took my working hatch release and tried to mod to this thread. never did get it to work. Tore it all out and bought replacement parts for everything. Now my hatch doesn't work with the Porsche parts either.
to test your hatch motor,
make sure that both fuses are good and that the pull switches are working.
NOTE the pull switches can internally short out if the little plastic washer cracks then the pin in the switch will not be isolated,
thus every pull will blow the fuse .
NOTE to test if the switch is shorted see if there is continuity on the pins when its pulled then test the shaft to each pin IIRC if you have the pin with continuity then the plastic has broken.
NOTE this switch can be fixed, it requires taking it apart,
then I used thick carpet thread and wrapped it around the shaft to isolate the internal contacts,
a dab of super glue and it should set the thread
NOTE you could pull the wires off the switch and touch them together this should activate the latch

Since my mod only removed the motor & the plastic ball cup - I see no reason you couldn't restore it fully to stock with minimal fuss - did something get broken? I know this is an old post but seems worth a follow-up here...
The reason it didn't work, at least partially is the hairline crack in the hatch latch. Waiting for a new replacement non Porsche part to be made as the Porsche one is something like $500 now up from $100
