Default Fender well liners

Just had a hands on with a brand new one here at 928sRUS Corporate HQ.

Took a while to find it in the warehouse, but we did.

Dated with a 2011 Manuf date...its _really nice_.

They are not a thin plastic, but a stiff rubbery material, 1/8 to 3/16" thick. You can hold it up in the air..sideways, from a corner arch of it..and it barely deflects..but its not uber stiff.

If I did that to one of my mazda liners, it would fold itself around my hand, they are truly wafer thin plastic.

The oem liner when rapped with a hand, tool/etc, is well damped. The low density closed cell foam on the back, is a good HF sound insulator. (I would add more, myself)

They aint flimsy..

A: Got a knife? Sure you can. Unknown how many attachment points match up/etc..but..getting creative anything is possible.

Although..I can see an issue where the OEM liner sits IN the lip of the wheel well opening..and without that, loses support.

But like I said..there are ways if one is creative.

Which one is that, a rear for 91+ as so often discussed around here?

So they start out looking and functioning properly... unfortunately we all know how they end up - flimsy is built in - its just not yet obvious...

I would not put that crap back on my car at any price - it was a mistake in materials choice and a quite embarassingly unworthy effort by Porsche.

The B (or C?) team strikes again - you'd think they would have fired them already by then...

The recipe was easy - use the same material the front flexi-liners were made from and add foam to the back - just too hard for the geniuses to figure out I guess....

So they used tar paper & wax (or something rather like it...) to make these crappy things...

Jeff:

When did you buy a GTS?

Unlike the early (89 and before) S4 plastic liner(s), which hold up pretty well, and must be NLA, the later S4 and GTS insulated liner starts out nice and might make it 10 years before it turns to something with the tensile strength of saltine crackers.

What most of us S4 owners need is just the passenger (right) side liner as we weren't given one by the factory. My original driver side liner is still fine. Jerry has chosen to focus on the GTS liners since all of those owners, although far fewer in number than 87-89 S4 owners, have the saltine cracker liners that have long ago broken up.

I dont have a GTS, just doing my own mental comparison...I copuld be so lucky that something I bought OEM, was my problem again in 20yrs.

Id bet its degradation over time from ozone (pollution) & exhaust exposure that is drying it out.

line-X it before install? I dunno.

But I became intrigued once I realized that im not gonna save anything for an aftermarket kit, that still needs work to install.

Been bitten by spending the same as OEM on a radiator, and then 2yrs later forced to buy an OEM radiator..ive grown an itchy hair now that gets annoyed when im asked to compare OEM or not, and not saving a considerable amount of cash that I could other wise use on hookers and blow. (Should have seen the dancers we had at spring fling!)

So..I was intrigued to see an OEM one...study a few deisgn issues on how it mounts that were interesting, and noted what an aweseome sound killer it was..in its material.

Just diving into my new acquisition, and removed the front wheel well liners to clean/scrub the underpinnings. There are no liners in my '89 S4 rear wheel wells. There are plastic bulkheads, but no liners. Should there be?
