Default Supercharged S4 project car

I have my brother's old 1987 S4 5 speed with a Stage II blower on it, I bought the car from his estate. I need to figure out where to go from here, how much to fix it up and how much to try to restore to stock to sell, it, if I do not decide to keep it and race it someday. Keeping it seems unlikely due to storage space and future logistics but I will think hard about it while cleaning it up and getting the title work done. I just had the car shipped to my place in CO and am going to get a CO title for it. I feel this is not going to be difficult once I have the VIN inspection done. I could not get the title sorted in TX remotely. It had been in storage (indoors) at Car Czar in Corpus Christi.

It currently has a high idle but that's is probably not a big deal for me to fix. I'm familiar with forced induction cars and vacuum leaks, and the ISV and whatnot.

The big fork in the road is track car vs. obnoxious street car vs street car. The cat pipe has been misplaced so it'll need some effort to pass CO smog. It has Sparco Evos in it, the stock front seats are long gone and the interior is otherwise a mess. I need to clean it and evaluate. The driver's side door card is water damaged. I'll clean the interior and see if it looks like it could be made decent in there again or if it's destined to be a track car interior.

I'll generate some questions as I get into this mess.

What kit is in it? I think that will make a big difference on what to do. Also has the car ever been sharktuned. I think it would be great to keep the supercharger on after the leaks are fixed and it is re-tuned. If you want to run a poll I vote for "obnoxious street car".

There might be someone who would like it like that. Not me. The seats are pretty terrible for street use and there is the loud, drony exhaust to contend with. It's a Murf kit, water to air intercooled. Performance is brisk. I do not believe it has been sharktuned. If I was going to use it on the street I'd probably swap on a stock exhaust and stock front seats, and maybe ditch the supercharger, then I'd decide that was too much work and find a different car (or drive my S4 automatic.) Someone else might want it for a streetable track oriented car though.

Leave the supercharger and put in stock seats.

After driving my supercharged Audi S4 I have realized how much my 928 needs a supercharger.

Update:

It's an open diff. The high idle was just a throttle cable stuck partway out of the adjuster, that has been sorted. It won't idle cold for about 30 seconds but that might be supercharger related (or ISV.) It's running well and not as rusty under the hood as I had feared. An aluminum radiator is fitted.

The underhood insulation is falling to dust, I suppose I need to put a tarp over the motor and scrape that stuff off. A few interior bits are broken or missing (like the tool kit holder.)

I took the car to the DMV today and started the title work. They want a copy of the death certificate, otherwise they say I am all set. I might get that done today if the fax arrives in the next few hours.

The shifter is pretty floppy, it is hard to get 1st or reverse and easy to shift from 1-4, I will try to inspect the linkage. 4th is in the center or perhaps left of there even. It's also generally loose.

The tach is not working, but other gauges are working fine. I have an '!' light all the time which can be dismissed with the dash button. It might be the parking brake light, I'll inventory the telltales.

The exhaust is not as annoying as I recall but I did not get up to 65-75mph, speeds I recall it boomed and droned pretty good. It's a car that inspires mischief, reminds me of my Ducati. It's hard not to chirp the tires and merge into traffic with more throttle than is strictly needed.

Large pics here, car not washed, interior not cleaned. The lighting was not great for interior shots:

The shifter is pretty easy to sort. If its the rear shifter there is a hex bolt that can be a pain in the ***. I actually left mine alone and did a very easy mod that involved sliding the new bushing in with one end cut off and securing with a hose clamp. It is still perfect after 3 years. The cars looks like it is accuratly described as a project car. It would be great if you would keep it but if not hopefully it goes someone who can give it the love it needs.

Hi Joel

I'd fix the small things one at a time and decide as you go along. The last thing I would do is to remove the supercharger. (Unless you want to sell it to me...)

Good luck!

This car looks like a perfect candidate for the following interior currently on the market:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-strokers.html

That plus a muffler and some minor paint touch up and it would fit right in at many Country Club's Plus think of the fun getting there & back in not an everyday car.

Restore the shark and keep your brother's car & memories near.

Oh yeah, I'll trade you my stock cats for your X-pipe and cover shipping both ways

That's a Murf928 Stage 2 setup.

Best upgrade would be to a stage 3 which changes the following:
1. Removes the FMU - returns to stock fuel pressure
2. 42lb injectors
3. New LH and EZK chips

To contact Tim Murphy on the upgrade, send an e-mail to: info@murf928.com

Lay a sheet over the engine bay, and then just suck the insulation off with a vacuum cleaner (and a plastic scraper).

Thanks, that'll be the plan for the underhood foam. Re: the supercharger kit, I can see red top injectors but the car does indeed have an FMU. I do not know if these are 30 pound injectors. The car has a narrowband AFM gauge but I'm not going to try to look at it when under boost. What is this, 500HP?

That linen interior would be great for this car (perhaps a bit too nice) but at $5K it's too much for me to put into the car. I have some 944 seats, wrong color, but I might install them for the time being and consider recovering them or keeping an eye out for a better option. The Sparcos make driving the car a chore and I have to pick which of my hip bones gets to be in the bucket.

My plan at this point is to see if someone wants the car (nearly) as-is while I get the title work done. I will look for some interior bits, get an odometer gear, fix the tach, evaluate the AC, etc. As it sits I figure the car is worth $5500 and the SC kit an additional $3500.

Update: Title work is done! I should get the title in a week or so. \I also found that the car is massively easier to get into and fit into with a boat cushion in the seat bucket. This makes the Sparcos tolerable but I am still tempted to put my 968 seats into the car and put some nicer seats into my 968. I suspect I could get 928 leather covers and use them on the 944/968 seat frames, I think the deeper pleats and padding is part of the 928 cover.

Next I plan to diagnose the shifter and the AC. Perhaps also pull the ISV and clean or replace it. If the car was easier to heel-toe this would be less of an issue.

Progress!
-Joel.
