What to do with Supercharged S4 5 speed?
I have a 1987 928S4 is in storage in Corpus Christi TX and I really need to figure out what to do with it. Ideally I would like to keep the car and run it in the Texas Mile one day but that seems unlikely to be possible within a reasonable amount of time. I have been very busy with work and that trend continues.
My brother passed on in 2009 after an accidental fall. His estate was and is a mess. I decided to try to secure his 928, which was his pride an joy in his stable of 5-6 cars. I did not want to see the 928 get sold off cheap to some stranger who would probably just part it out. The manager of the estate wanted to sell it to get some cash into the estate for expenses and to reduce storage costs. I bought the 928 about a year ago and am now storing it at Car Czar in Corpus. I planned to get it to CO so I could work on it and that is one option if shipping could be arranged reasonably, although if I ship it to CO just to sell it I spend money to move it to a smaller market which does not make sense. It'd be a great ORR or Texas Mile car and we do not have much of that in CO. The smart thing to do perhaps is to sell it to someone in TX who might race it or otherwise enjoy it. It's doing no one any good at present.
It has race seats in it and I do not believe the AC is working which makes driving it a long distance unappealing, plus it'd probably need some sorting before a drive was attempted.
Details:
1987 928S4
L35U Venetian Blue Metallic
5 speed
LSD? - unknown, I know he added LSD to some of his cars. No option code 220 on the sticker.
Murf stage 2 or 3 intercooled supercharger kit (V2 blower and air to water IC are evident)
X pipe
RMB
17" C2 replica wheels
Sparco Evo seats
Replaced S4 engine (I was told it was a GT engine but the block is an
early S4: 81H 06256, probably a squirter block. Heads are unknown.)
Known issues:
Lots of surface rust on the underhood parts, brakes, etc.
Dirty interior that got damp in storage - Paul Champagne thought the
door cards could be steamed and repaired. Dash is cracked.
Broken odometer gear - Mileage unknown.
I recall that the AC is not working, reasons unknown.
Input welcome.
Thanks,
-Joel.

Well it's not an enjoyable car to drive on the street (for me) and I have three other P-cars and a Ducati. It's also a bit rough. Were I to make a street car out of it I'd be undoing a lot of the mods and doing a great deal of fix-up to it when instead I could just be enjoying the cars I have. Time is the big problem for me at present. That and storage space.

This could be a project that would be fun.

Sorry to here about the passing of your brother and his love of p-cars. This sounds like a great project for you to take back to Colorado. I know it needs some work but I think it might be one of those things that you get 5 years down the road and regret selling it.

Thanks! I probably would not regret selling it unless I got a huge influx of free time which honestly seems unlikely. I have other projects and it would be hard to get this one high enough up the priority list. I can be pretty pragmatic about projects. If I could store it for free and without damage for 15-20 years until I retire I might feel differently about it, or if there was an easy way to get it to CO and store it here I could re-evaluate but just shipping it up here to put in my yard does not seem sensible.
If I wanted to run it in the TX Mile I'd have to get it to CO and prep it, then store and maintain it until the race, then get to the race and race it, get back... That'd be great if I was retired or semi-retired and had disposable income.
If I was going to do DE locally I'd want a slower car that I could learn more with. A 500HP car would not be good for track education, tire budget, etc. and if I had time for a DE I'd probably prefer to drive to Steamboat or Silverton instead.
Good input, keep it coming.

Tony77 is in Rockport and has access to a trailer. You might PM him and ask for help. He might be able to store it for you/have his buddy Jeff work on it/bring it to Third Coast to pass off to SeanR/any other numerous options.

Race Car
Could refresh and add another 6 speed to the 928 corrals down there.....
Its a personal decision- your affinity for the car if/when it runs correctly, the sentimental value attached that particular piece of property, your patience for the sorting process, etc.
Tough decision- good luck and thanks for posting up to the community for views!

Former Vendor
Put it back to stock and enjoy it.
Have someone remove the supercharger, find some stock seats, and fix the A/C so you can get it home.
There's some great 928 mechanics, in both Texas and Colorado that can help you out.

If you took Greg's advice you could probably sell the Murph setup for enough to finance much of the refresh and repair necessary to get it to a good driver level.

I doubt it could be restored to a good driver state for less than the cost of a nicer starting point. If you can sell a used Murf kit for $6K and I had time to do the work myself I'd have a fighting chance.
A good bit of work would be involved in taking what I consider to be a track car that can be street driven back to being a decent street car and that's a waste if someone would want it more or less as-is. If I pulled the blower, put the cats back on, got some nice seats, door cards, fixed the AC, etc. I'd still have a car with some cosmetic challenges to park next to my nicer S4 and I doubt it would get driven. There are cheaper and easier ways to get into a good 928 driver and I would not be sentimental about the car other than running it at the TX mile and maybe on the salt. (We did some driving on the salt in years past, never a proper event and never in a P car but good times.) All in all I am not going to walk past a nicer car to drive this one on the street for sentimental reasons.
It would also be a decent street car for the sort of person who is OK with a loud drony exhaust, race seats and blower whine but for me it'd need a lot of un-doing and in the end I'd still want better cosmetics, which are expensive and/or time consuming.
It' sounding like finding someone who wants it as a track car or obnoxious street car is best.
