I would walk into a a DMV with that picture and your story. You never know what they have on file that would lead to a vin number then a history.

Nice "new" ride!

I'm doing exactly that sorta thing with my Dad for his 83rd birthday! Dad used to sell Porsches at a dealership outside Ft Knox, KY from late 60s - early 90s. He'd bring home any number of them as "Demos" but only ONCE did he bring home a 928... too expensive for a Demo. He also test drove new cars at Columbus Motor Speedway (back in the early 70's) with the likes of Mark Donahue Anyway, he could never afford to buy a Porsche (too many kids) but he could drive the hell out of them

On April 15th were going on a father & son road trip in the Porkenized 86.5 Shark to Belzoni, Mississippi (his hometown) via Lexington & E-town, KY, and Nashville & Memphis, TN. Lots of great driving & smooth highways He cant drive like he used to, gets confused sometimes, etc, so I'll be doing most of that... But he'll love going down the Bluegrass Parkway between Lexington & E-town. 1st "super-elevated" (banked) highway in KY - its a BLAST to drive. Should be a good week!!

Righteous story, Cole. My dad's cars blew...

Joel, take your dad down the Natchez Trace... Then jump over to Belzoni...

What a great story, and this is the part that rings true with me. I got my learner's permit in 1975 at age 15. Just remember what cars were like in the late 70's - even into the early 80's.

And the first 928's were light years ahead in every way.

When I bought my '78 in 1990, it was the most competent car I had ever driven.

Thanks guys. Thought you would enjoy

My dad had a stroke about 9 years ago leaving him disabled. He can no longer drive and its had getting him in and out of cars. He has seen the 928S4 but never been in it. Instead he must suffer and ride in my Cayenne Turbo when I haul him around.

The original 928 was bought and serviced here in Denver at Prestige Porsche. I swore I saw it once about 9 years ago down in Castle Rock.

Have to remember this was the late 70s and early 80s so I can't imagine the state, the dealer or the insurance company have any records going back that far.

It was traded in to a dealership in Longmont, Co for a 1987 Jeep Wrangler.

I actually looked at a car I found on craigslist about 5 years ago that could have been it. Same exterior color but when I got there is had a different interior.

Love the story, Cole.

FWIW, I could point you in the right direction if you wanted to find it.

Your "replacement " car looks great! Beautimus color.

Carfax don't help but http://www.autocheck.com will. Old 10 digit long VIN will give result when 7 spaces are put in front. For example " 9288100011":

ROW '78 9288100011 = 1 record
ROW '78 9288100012 = 1 record
ROW '78 9288100013 = 9 records
ROW '78 9288100014 = -
ROW '78 9288100015 = -
ROW '78 9288100016 = 22 records
ROW '78 9288100017 = -
ROW '78 9288100018 = -
ROW '78 9288100019 = -
ROW '78 9288100020 = -
ROW '78 9288100021 = -

US '78 9288200011 = -
US '78 9288200012 = -
US '78 9288200013 = -
US '78 9288200014 = -
US '78 9288200015 = 7 records
US '78 9288200016 = -
US '78 9288200017 = -
US '78 9288200018 = -
US '78 9288200019 = -
US '78 9288200020 = -
US '78 9288200021 = 35 records

Ladies and gentleman, let the hunt begin. Based on above its very likely at least 9288100013 has been in USA or Canada for years. Maybe also 9288100012. Who will dig them up? They can also be mistakes but you never know.

What is odd is that so many early US models don't have records. Some of them might have stayed out of US all their lives. For example 9288200053 has always stayed away. 9288200016 is also now in Finland and has been for years. Maybe thats why there aren't any records for it.

It seems I need to dug up old code and start running it again. I had forgot about Autocheck and what it could help on understanding early MY production numbers etc.

I hope you find that '78 someday, Cole.
I have thought of doing the same thing. In fact. I am going to do that today.

Great idea.

Well, of course I'd love to track it down! Even just for curiosity sake.

I don't have many clues to go on though. Original owner was Craig Ford in Littleton, Colorado.

Well, I've done a little digging and come up short.

State Farm was actually really helpful but only has records going back so far. S eventually came up with nothing.

No help at DMV.

I imagine the Porsche dealer will be the same way.

Ideas?

What can help in searches is to work from as many directions with as much information as you can recall or dig up. VIN is the key, all the records etc, any of a number of documents from repairs, insurance, or license, but if none of those can be located I would start by putting together as much information as you can.

Model year and maybe date it was purchased, date it was sold.
Color and color code, land shark oz has a good collection of colors with code info.
Interior and options, again with the codes for anything distinctive.

Does Colorado DMV have any kind of search function to maybe narrow the number of VIN reg in CO?

Google with what you have.

Once narrowed get an unlimited or whatever close to that these days autocheck and try some "test" vin numbers to get an idea of the range of registrations around the purchase date. Once the range is workable, check one by one for matching details.
