It's such a cool thing for us brainless non- engineer's to have the privilege of witnessing the start-up, development and idea exchange that goes on when guys in our 928 talent pool get together on a project that makes our cars even better.
The other cool thing is that we all get to take advantage of this outstanding group of owners who help to make the gene pool of our own 928's even better which ensures that our marquee with continue to improve with age....
Thank you Hans, Greg, Ken, Constantine, Sean,Dave, Jeff and all the other "unsung" hero's who have the knowledge and foresight to continually make a great car greater.
Also have to shout out to Roger and the other parts suppliers who stay on top of these innovations and help bring them to the marketplace so that we can participate.
For those about to rock, we "salute" you!

+1 (i.e. a big plus 1) what marine928 said... and that's coming from a retired Army medic who, in a previous life, worked in a handful of startups! (lol)

Alright, I have bids coming in from 5 shops. So far, it doesnt look like we get a decent price break until 25 sets. I am still waiting on two bids, so will keep everyone posted.

I think I have a spare trans mount laying around, but if someone wants a matching rear mount and has one they want to send in, I will take a look.

I should have some firm numbers in the next couple days, definitely by the end of the week.

I know the motor mount system can be done for under $500/set My target price is $450 with stainless hardware. If I can make them for less, I certainly will, but lets use that as the budgetary number.

We will need to get close to that 25 pair order though to reach $450. If you are in, send me a PM and I will start a tally.

Thanks,
Hans

This is a cool project. I almost wish I hadn't just replaced my motor mounts. I say almost because I doubt I'd be willing to give up a few months use of the car while waiting for these mounts.

While getting bids, see what kind of production run it would take to get these made at a price where it would make sense for Roger (or someone else) to buy the entire run and stock them for the 928 community. A vendor would need to be able to get a decent mark up to make having his money tied up in inventory worthwhile. So, you might need to get the cost below $225 with a retail of about $400 to make it possible (the next question would be the projected inventory turn). But, if Roger is selling 20 Volvo mounts a month, it might not be difficult to believe he could sell 60 of these a year. (While superior to the Volvo mount, many would be expected to buy the cheaper Volvo mount. Otherwise, why wouldn't more opt for the Porsche mount at $578?)

Not getting a vendor involved will greatly limit the utility of the design -- only people needing mounts now or in near future will buy them. What about those needing mounts in a few short months?

David,

I agree, getting a vendor on board would be preferable. However the machining costs alone now are far more than $225/set and that does not include the custom molded inserts, hardware, or any design time or prototype expense. These will never compete with the old Ford Anchor mounts or the Volvo mounts in price, but a hydraulic unit will leak eventually. Its good to have options, and I think at $450, while not cheap, its between stock and the OE replacement.

Hans, nice work! Put me down for two sets if these ever come to market.

PM sent...

Total tangent: I've gotta wonder, if we can use Volvo mounts, could other cars that use the same Volvo mounts use your mounts?

Yes, it's true, I once owned a Volvo. One vendor I used for a few things was, I think, IPD (www.ipdusa.com). Maybe someone from our big three knows someone from their big three and could- as the expression goes- do lunch? (There's probably a Lao Tzu reference in there somewhere... lol.)

That makes sense. Worth a try.

Not a bad idea at all. Its something worth looking into.

I hope to have all the quotes back in by Monday, and will know more then.

Thanks

Any updates on the mounts? There are a couple of us here in vegas that are in desperate need of mounts. We both have 82's will these work with that MY?
Thanks,
B

Brighton,

Still need more people to sign on before making these, and unfortunately the later mounts are different than the early version. I believe you would have to swap the crossmember if you wanted to use the newer style mounts, but I am not an OB expert.

Thanks
Hans

I had a little bit of time last night to measure up and get a stock mount into my CAD package. I sliced it up, found some stocked poly isolators, and whipped up a first draft rebuildable transaxle mount. I will have to print a test part to confirm fit, and then have a test set made and run them, but if we can get enough people for the motor mounts, I will make a matching set of trans mounts as well.

Here is a webviewer link for the draft of the new mount:

http://cloudviewer.spaceclaim.com/c1...3f1b71816.html

I would be possible to increase the depth of the isolator mount pockets for use with a shim stack. I am not sure how helpful that would be to lower or raise the transaxle that short amount, but its something that could be easily incorporated if anyone sees the benefit for tweaking that +/- say 5mm.
