Default Talk to me about con-rod bearings..

So, I pulled the 2/6 on the track car today and the results were not good. No copper or grooving, but definite wear and some galling. I've read GB's discourse on glyco vs porsche and the sizing... so I'm asking the rennlist collective.....what would you do,

Get the glyco's and plastigauge to make sure they are not too tight..or go Porsche and hope the pairs "work"?..

I'm not pulling the engine, so all work will happen from the underside and I'm assuming it'll be tough/near impossible to use a micrometer from there?.. anyway ..some pics... (will post up the others once I pull them)...

and the crank...

I would mic the bearings you have and compare that to a set of glycos, or phone Greg with those mic'ed measurements and see if he'd sell you just the right sizes that you need.

Looks like its time to invest in a set of vernier mics. Anyone have a source that sells one with the correct spindle to mic split shell bearings?

I think Harbor Freight has one for $5.99....should be accurate enough ????

I would be afraid of any instrument that is supposed to be accurate down to a ten thousandth, that cost any less than.... $9.99 LOL.

Plus, either the anvil or the spindle needs to have a curved bit to allow the mic to penetrate down into the well of the bearing. I don't think you'll find that for $5.99.

See how the anvil on this one is rounded so that it fits down in the bearing, that's what you need to find.

those bearings need replacement.....but in terms of race 928's they look really good!!! I have seen far worse...

If you are running the later oil pan then you are running on borrowed time..... Since I installed the OB oil pan I have not seen low oil pressures, had oil analysis that showed bearing wear or any other issues?

You can also use a pin or bearing ball to measure shell thickness along with a normal mic.
You're not going to be able to measue the conn rod bore though to be able to know true clearance.
I don't know about Porsche bearing wisdom but i measured one and found it to have low clearance which is fine but also zero eccentricity which I don't like.

I was joking about the harbor freight one LOL...
so...it seems we can go about this three ways...

Plastigauge (not on the GB approved list)

Anvil Micrometer bearing thickness measurements (Colin suggested) and sounds like the easiest.

Dial Bore indicator that measures the actual clearance of the bearing in the rod vs. the crankshaft diameter giving the bearing clearance (GB standard operating procedure)?

Any others..?

Dumb? Perhaps but far better than where you're at.

Not sure if the minor tracking did this..or it's a result of the low startup oil pressure (very brief) because the previous person who was in there forgot to put the oil pump bolt back in there ... or if it's a case of hot weather traffic induced high oil temp (91 block) and crappy oil (like Dan H posted).

The OB oil pan, cloverleaf, screen, old style pickup, GB pan spacer, GB windage screen are just waiting to go back on...once the bearings are done..
