Anyone considered why Porsche put that vent there?

It wasn't to ruin your paint.

I am relying on Carl to have done this.

to let expanding fluid out and not let the brake res pop off would be my guess. but i doubt most people would ever have that problem..

Close. The cap doesnt pop off, it wont let calipers fully release.

Most wont, but it will depend on how hard one drives, and how BAD the fluid is.

If you cant vent or expand elsewhere, you gain residual pressure in the system..

I dunno, Im not sure if Porsche is a racing company or not. Could be wrong.

Jeff, I suspect the bellows were not widely available or used when the 928 brake fluid reservoir was designed. What does Porsche use on their new cars?

Are these the ones on Rockauto for $3.48 for the pair or $1.74 each?

It is interesting that that Dorman cap is specified for vehicles all the way back to the late 1970's... one such example that may seem quite familiar to us:

CHRYSLER LEBARON (1978 - 1995)

Almost anyone who has done any "near serious" track driving has probably experienced some 'belching' from the hole in the master cylinder cap. It occurs when small areas of the brake fluid in the caliper exceeding the boiling point and expanding dramatically in the caliper/brake line, forcing fluid back up into the reservoir. I always cover my reservoir cap on my track car with a double covering of the blue paper/fabric type shop towel, held on snugly with a tie wrap.

Even though I purge the brake system 2X per year (spring and late summer), and use ATE Blue Racing Fluid, I still get some spotting on the towel - about the size of a quarter at the end of 2-3 days of driving (225-350 miles on the track). I might consider these bellows for the '94 street/road car, but not the '89 track car.
