Question Opinions on restoration colour schemes

Ive had my 928s4 1987 for around 10 years.
It was originally granite green in colour with the matching interior. The interior was well worn and with cracks on the dash.
Somebody scratched the car with a key around 7 years ago. I took the opportunity then and had it repainted in seal grey. I then had the interior partially redone with new linen coloured carpet and a white dash and centre console as well as white on part of the door trims.

I now regret it and want to repaint it again and redo the whole of the interior including retrimming the leather.

Before I do it I would like to ask you all whether I should have it all redone in the original colours or maybe something else.

I'd like to get it right and although I dont like granite green i feel like I have an obligation to the car to go back to original.

What do you all think?

I personally love the combination of granite green and greygreen interior. However, you should know that greygreen sliverknit carpet has been hard to come-by in past years. You'd have to do some digging on this first.

In general - unless the original color is particularly ugly, it is usually best to stick with it.

Many very collectible cars have color changes and so long as it is a good job it seems ok with collectors.
I recently repainted my 1983S which had its original aged Slate Blue paint in my garage i converted to a spray booth.
I had the Lessanol (mid grade Sikkens) paint color tweaked a little touch darker (extra black&violet) than it was originally. See Avitar) Subtle enough that the paint in the jamb areas does't appear different. That is an option.

Personally, I don't like living with metallics, i hate them actually.. because they are very hard to repair (match) You can always get the color but the flake consistency is very tough to get to match perfectly and the whole car ends up needing repainting over a run away shopping cart.
I am planning to repaint mine again in a few years and will either go with the slate blue without any metallic flake, or an electric or royal non metallic blue.
I say paint it your absolute dream color it will cost the same basically, but if it makes you smile when the garage door opens it will be worth every penny.

Well, I am thinking about a clour change too, but can't figure out if it will be a nice combination with the interior either. Original colour is oakgrün with green interior with pascha (see avatar). New colour would be Lindgrün like the famous "Kermit" cars. I have sprayed a headlamp bowl in this colour and it seems to match, but how a bout a complete car?

Make it the colour you want, I say. It takes more time and effort with a colour change but the end result is your own unique 928.

You have an interesting color 928. It is possible to see additional photos? What number of this paint?

No insult intended, but your car has no “collector” value. Unless it is actually “unmolested” original, which it isn’t because you have already changed colors, there is no added value in going back to original. Maybe a full blown restoration to original would be appealing but certainly makes no monetary sense.

I say make it what ever you like, it’s your car. If you are concerned about resale (ease of, not value in) then stick to combinations that appeal to the masses and you’ll be good to go.

Peace and good luck

DPM

I agree that if you're concerned with resale value, go with something common.

If you're not concerned about resale, than you probably won't like my suggestion, but I've always liked S4's in caramel beige with linen interior.

Oh,

IS USELESS.....

Paint it what ever you want. Resale will not matter.

The color has been changed once so either changing again or repainting stock will not matter.

I think NICE paint ( either stock, original or repaint ) is ALWAYS better than worn original paint. But thats my opinion.

Thanks for all your input so far but now I'm even more confused. In Australia it seems as most people want everything in the original combos.
As for my interior, the main practical issue is that the light coloured dash creates glare/reflexion on the windscreen making it difficult to see sometimes. Also, I never had the pleasure of seeing that granite green interior in new condition. It might of looked cool when new. But let me tell you, in 2002 when I bought it, it looked crappy. Some colours sort of age well with patina etc especially browns, but not this green.
Has anyone seen the granite green when new?

I'm going to spend the money either way. Maybe the original colours would have looked good when fresh? I mean I am getting the whole thing reupholstered inside including the vynil bits.

Would you guys like to see some photos?

If you search this forum for "greygreen" - I'm sure you'll find pictures of interiors in that color.

For example:

Do what color you LIKE....do not worry about POTENTIAL future value. Many things can happen to a car most are bad, crashed ,stolen, burn, crushed by a tree, major mechanical failure. There is no assurance that 928s will in fact appreciate or even maintain value as the collector car market is very fickle and unpredictable as a whole and even more so for a specific model.
The only reason to have a 928 is it makes you smile for one reason or another, so paint it what ever will make you smile NOW ! Because neither we nor the car are assured a future.

Grey green.. I think this is the same as 'Panza Grun' looks like it was used as cammo in a the war or something. My car had this and 'Mushroom' now it's orange although I still have the original dash.

I cut out some card in the shape of the pod, painted it with Matt black paint and stuck it to the top of the pod to solve my glare issues
