That cage should have never passed the initial inspection required
to get a log book for the car. Some one didn't do their job. Glad
the driver is O.K.

The LAST time it came, we saw "really good welds" in there..very hard places. Grabbed a pick. Bondo with paint fell out.
And this car had 3-4 _years_ of race history on it..including its yearly annual inspections.
Those people are out there (the inspectors) and most drivers/owners dont know they're not really inspecting them.
The lamest things, are like..a 130lb stack of weights with 1 bolt holding them down. (Rules are a 3/8" bolt and washers per xxlbs). And now you have a guy that if he pulls it out, has pulled out SO much stuff from the car "to be light" that he has no room to mount 130lbs of weight safety in the chassis (within class rules of where to place it).
Know your rules ppl, not just the safety ones, but the ones that define how your class works.

A long time ago, I knew a guy that bought a Brabham Bt-18 formula car. As originally built they had a small dia. roll hoop. Somewhere along the line the rules changed. When he stripped the chassis for a re paint he discovered that rather than comply with the change in rule spec someone along the line just put a couple of layers of fiberglass cloth over the original hoop to increase the diameter. Darwin award.

Lack of inspection of cage welds, especially halo.
Seems to be a universal human error condition there.
Easy to miss unless you have a good mirror, light, and set of picks to find em. But if you find bad halo welds, youll then find bad B pillar welds to door bars and harness bars, etc...and pad attachment welds..
This is the top of the welds in a -brand- new (or was) build for a brand new spec series car from last year.
Its easy to see, once the jaws cut the car apart to assist the driver getting out (he was fine, but..this should scare you a lot Mark..this is whats out there)

oh, crappy cages. well that is the fault of the owner. you got to get it done by someone that knows what they are doing. so, my cage was built by someone that builds Grand Am cars. the welds dont look like that! wow, thats really bad. so, what should i be scared of??
Attention to detail doesnt just harm the owners.
Plus..do you do an annual inspection on a car you dont own that you get into for any reason..or you just "go with it..."

funny. that was a race we all boycotted!
usually there are 15 cars, its a nice group with a lot of close racing. cant find my thunderhill starting picture, but it has a lot more cars!
anyway, found out some more information on the NASA deal. you were right Jeff, we are NOT running as a new group called AV8SS, we are running under AI or AIX but they are streamling our licensing with only a submission of our SCCA licenses, and makiing us run their banners along with ours. we will work out our placing and prizes on our own. safety tech wil alow us to run what SCCA has sanctioned for IT safety rules. i think its almost the same. No side window net on the passenger side as i had thought, or that PRC runs with , in the NASA group.
so, ill be out there running in the march 17th event.

just found out that , as the plot thickens, the AV8SS cars are running under the AI banner in the nasa weekends, so speedtoys is right. we all have to have NASA licenses and NASA log books.
Just got my log book from Borelli Motorsports and they found ONE thing that didnt jive with the rule book. the 6 point harness submarine belts need to mount 18" behind the bottom seat hole. well, easy change .
one more snafu, is that the 928s or any other cars that dont meet AI requirements, have to run in Super unlimited. I guess later on, they figure out what the places were in AV8SS. so, it looks like ill be able to run with the old Wardlow Corevette now owned by Bill Brinkeroff.
got the nasa racing license today, so all set for the season opener , but with NASA. should be fun.

my nasa logbook is all done.....a few welds needed attention, new stickers, new patch on my suit and other little things...
The bummer is I can't make next weekend.....gotta work "mandatory" overtime until 0700 Sat morning...it sucks.... I am shooting for the April event at Thunderhill, its the logistically the easiest for me..... I am planning on running GTS4....higher than I "need" too...but lightly attended locally...vs the insanely fast GTS3 where I have no chance..... Hopefully next year after developing aero I can compete in GTS3....

(then figure out where your car best fits and changes needed to make it fit) You have been doing HPDE for too many years now, time to get in a real race and have some fun with us!
