Default 79 Left and right engine compartment hood seals

My 79 did not have seals which according to the parts manual I have look to run the full length of the engine bay on each side - item #5.

I ordered the PN listed from one of the big 3 and got a approximately 3 inch piece for each side!

Is there a seal that runs the full length?

Thanks
Jim

Nope - Not that I have ever seen, anyway.

The two small pieces go just in front of the crossbar, to prevent water from running into the electrics.

it's a good point, though. Anytime I wash the car, upon opening the hood, there is always water spots in way of the + positive connection point and 14 point connector. They're afforded some protection by the plastic cover, but still....you would think there should be a gasket running full lenght of the hood

Early cars - 78/79 - had a single seal which ran the complete length of the fender. Not currently available from Porsche. Part number was 928 511 551 02. This superceded to an 03 which is a much shorter seal for the 78 to 86 cars. A similar seal is used on the 87 to 95 cars 928 504 551 03.

Jay,
I ran into this restoring the engine bay on my 79 as well.
That strip has been NLA for a Looooong time!!

I started using the shorter strips and they disintegrate in a short period of time.
(Not sure why but the material sux!!!)

I then looked to the later model part # and started using those. I just replicated basically what they did w the 87 and later cars (locations) an they worked good. (they are probably 7 years old now and have held up)

I put them on either side of the front area (electric fan area) and right behind the top cross brace.

On a non related note, I also installed a "full" cowl cover instead of that half *** $##TTY one the factory installed. It looks a whole lot better as well.
Jerry Feather has them now and they look good.

Good luck!

yes; my 78 has the seal on each side that runs the complete length of the upper fender lip in the bay. That is an early design, and also note that these early cars did not use the hot post cover. Presumably, the long seal was deemed sufficient to protect the engine bay electronics from water.

Interesting, and I thought my hot post cover was missing. I put one on anyway.

I keep bugging Rog to source correct replacents for these seals. Was hoping when I saw a post from him that he'd be saying they're arriving any day now. How about it Rog, any progress?

You would think that if Porsche could find seal material to cut down to 3 inch pieces that someone in this community could have found something that would work available by the roll.

Certainly these are made in 3 inch segments!

I agree 100% but it is all about time and return of investment on the time spent. We spend every waking hour developing new products and bringing them to market. The fender seal for the 78/79 cars is a small market but I will find the time to source a correct alternative one day.

My early 78/79 cars did have the cover and the post cap. PET shows both were part of those cars as well.

Ed, I am not saying you are wrong but from where I am sitting they did come with the cover and cap. Maybe Jim D can jump in and offer an insight.

I too last year ordered what I thought were full length seals ,only to receive two 4 inch bits of crap sponge (OPC).

Surely if we knew the profile of the original full length seals, a generic substitute could be used/obtained (doubt if they are super 928 specially designed Porsche type seals ??)

Like maybe something from this eclectic mix ????

Rog - I'm guessing yours were modified. The **** that holds that cover on is different from the stock **** over the hot post that came on these early models, and needed to be replaced if you wanted to add the post cover. I actually bought the hot post cover when I first bought the car, thinking it was missing, then discovered that I could not get it to fit correctly with the **** that was on the hot post - it is just a cap cover type of thing. I researched and found out the early cars (78s in any event) did not use the hot post cover.
It would be interesting to hear more from others.

Ed ..., could you take a look at the link I posted (when you,ve got time) and see if any of them match the profile on your seals.

My press cars don't have evidence of having any hood seal or jump post cover. However, I was able to find a couple press car images that has the full-length seal, but still no cover.

Roger, if you look closely, you can see the seal has a compressive "wiper" along the outer edge.

Default PS.

Also worth noting, these pre-production cars don't have a "typical" jump post.
