Default Amsoil

I have used Mobil 1 in my 928.

I have recently acquired a Chevy Duramax and I am due to change the oil in it. The previous owner used synthetic oil and I am going to do the same.

I posted some questions on a duramax forum and a couple individuals mentioned using Amsoil. After doing the research, I have learned that it is a marketing company similar to a pyramid scheme.

I am not too concerned with whom profits from the sale but I would like to know if the product is what they claim it to be.

Does anyone use it in their 928? or any of their vehicles?

Has anyone seen any supporting documentation of how well it works or to the contrary?

It works well - they do have an interesting distribution scheme - lots of folks become small dealers for themselves for the discount and then are motivated to sell to others (BTW I am not such a dealer). You can order this direct from Amsoil by mail order.

They have good products with very good hot temperature and anti foaming characteristics - this is ideal for 928s that suffer to some extent from both issues (e.p with Mobil 1).

I now use the ZROD 20W50 and have used their regular 20W50 - for a hot climate like Phoenix this works well - I no longer have any low pressure warnings in summertime as I did frequently with Mobil 1.

Many threads on here - Mark Kibort for e.g. races with it and swears by it...

Cue Mark in 3... 2... 1...

Default Amsoil

I used to run all their products in my BMW Race Car. Thought they were darned good. Switched to Joe Gibbs because I thought they were better but would have no hesitation about Amsoils products.

All this being said, I hear there is some convincing evidence that RedLines new synthetic products are a notch above all else.

I bought my duramax a few years back and only use Amsoil in it as did the PO. No issues and I'm at 200k miles now. I'm using the Zrod 20W-50 in the 928 and seems to be doing fine.

Amsoil is absolutely top-shelf stuff.

Years ago the founder expressed mild regret at creating a MLM company for his synthetic oils.

If you can look past MLM, you'll see a premium company that's always a forerunner in synthetic oil technology.

Ok, since im the biggest fan and have more racing days in a 928 in the last 10 years, without any failures, ill chime in.

heck i pesonally think amsoil is pretty good. so is redline, and a few others. Mobil 1 showed that it fell on its face under high temps (i.e. 200F and higher) since we race and see temps near 250F, i diddnt want to use an oil that dropped the oil pressure to the warning light range. now, that was a few years ago and things at mobil 1 might be different. BUT, you cant argue with my sucess with amsoil and prior to the holbert car, redline 2050. amsoil also has much more zinc, but thats the racing oil which you really wouldnt want on the street. the street oil also 20 50, is probably just as good as several other botique oils out there.
amsoil does have a strange go to market strategy, but it seems to work. its a little pricey but the stuff works.

I'd think that the oil companies would be constantly evolving and what is true today, might not be true in 6 months...or even the next day. I've been told that the synthetic "stocks" all come from a couple of distributors. I'd also guess that the "additives" that are used are purchased from the "lowest bidder"....and can vary quite a bit.

And. from what Greg Nettles has said, about his days at a major oil company, things can vary from "batch to batch" quite a bit...

I'd hope that the "designer" oil makers might be able to control the quality a bit more. If they save $.02 a quart on a thousand quarts of oil....not a huge thing. However, $.02 a quart on 1,000,000 quarts is a different thing entirely.

I'd certainly use Amsoil, if I was having any issues with Torco. That being said, Jake(Ducman) has some strange things happening, with Torco oil, right now.

Wow - can't believe it took Mark a whole 23 hours to show up to an Amsoil thread !! I was way off ...

Mark - your consistent support for Amsoil is the reason I tried Amsoil in the first place - I'm a happy customer - no more summer oil pressure issues - as I had repeatedly experienced with all types of Mobil 1.

Amsoil 20W50 - Tested in full sun in Phoenix Arizona.. about 15 months now...

Alan
