Is it possible to remove the central timing cover with removing the crank bolt/ancillary pulleys etc ?
I assume it's necessary to remove the dipstick tube and the oil fill pipe to the sump - anything else ?

At least for 83-95, (dunno about 78-82) there's a concentric ring of black plastic around the crank snout. You might be able to remove it but you'd be breaking it in the process, no?

Sean is absolutely right. It is a pain. I think it has something to do with the way the cover fits around the oil pump hear. That seems to be where the fight always exists. If it's a 32 valve I think, at the very least, you have to move the power steering tensioner out of the way to remove the center cover.

I think if the arc on the cover around the crank pulley could be made a bit bigger, you would have more wiggle room???. As stated, i believe the oil pump area is an issue also. It sure would be nice to have a "quick pull" cover for inspection purposes.

the cover will hit the AC pulley and thats the hindrance.
Flexing the cover past the pulley will usually result in a small piece either cracking or snapping off
