Default How to confirm LSD (solved)

I have searched with no luck. When looking at an 87 S4 4spd transmission with supposed LSD, where are the part numbers located on the transaxle that confirm the diff? I can't get the vin of the doner car, all I have is the MB number 126-270-30-01.

Are the 928 numbers stamped on the unit somewhere?

960-300-004-12 open diff
960-300-004-13 locking diff

Thanks

Turn one of the out put flanges, if the one on the other side turns the same direction you've got LSD.

No way to guarantee LSD without a visual, regardless of option codes or case stampings. More than a few originally equipped LSD cars out there that now have open diffs, I wouldn't go by numbers alone.

That should tell you^^^

In terms of numbers, assuming nobody has "harvested" the unit...
see the excerpt just below from the tech spec manual. Read the "Note:...."

If you were to look up at the very bottom of the transaxle there is a number stamped in the case.
(My 85 Auto LSD number is pictured below)

If you could remove the cover, you'd expect to see something similar to the one on the right.
Left tranny is a G28/08 non LSD. Right tranny is a G28/07 LSD box. See the diff?

The donor car the OP mentioned as an 87 - which means the transmission serial no. doesn't indicate LSD; that started in '88.

The option codes are the easy guide, and testing with the crossmember jacked off the ground the most reliable confirmation short of taking a photo through the diff fill plug.

Hilton, it still should have /12/ inserted as shown in 85 auto lsd stamp above

For mine...with LSD
A28/04/ 12 / 16F00831
If it didn't have LSD....
A28/04 16F00831

look for this on the donor car...
G28/12/ 12 /11Hxxxxx

without LSD
G28/12 11Hxxxxx

Insertion of the /12/ is the same numbering sequence is true on my 84 and 86.5 manual LSD transmissions
The /12/ is missing from my 83, 84 and 86 transmissions that are non LSD

Well I cranked the output flange, and sure enough the opposite side spun in the same direction. Bingo LSD.

And for $300 the 87 4 spd AT, diff and torque tube are mine.

The seller also has both rear quarters, ac evaporator, trans cooler, 16" phone dials, rear hatch. Pm me if you want contact info, he's not on the forum.

On a side note, the donor car had an engine fire, so change those fuel lines already everyone.

Does he have a good rear wing? I need to replace mine. Also if the front fenders are in decent shape, I could use those as well.

Nope, just rear quarters, rear bumper, hatch and roof clip. The front of the car was completely torched by the fire.

Ryan,
If he has both rear tires off the ground and the vehicle in gear (manual) or park, regardless if it has a LSD or not the tires will turn on opposite directions. Also opposite directions indicates an open diff, not a LSD!

Make sure the car is in neutral with both rear tires off the ground then spin one wheel. If the other spins in the same direction then you likely have LSD.
