BP is tier one stuff, I'd use it more if the cost and distribution wasn't such a pain for me up here. Accounts and delivery with Royal Purple are one of the attractions for me.

Absolutely correct..............after all it is the owners who are making the choice and because of our passion we dont want to be damaging our engines.

I see lots of the same Mobil 1 reference link being posted here, seemingly suggesting that Mobil 1 does not have enough ZDDP:

Just to be clear, this link shows that most other Mobil 1 oils have low levels of zinc and phosphorus, EXCEPT 15w-50 which has 1200/1300 ppm respectively. From my research, Mobil 1 15w-50 has always had this level of zinc and phosphorus. Does anyone have any facts to prove otherwise?

I just talked to Mobil and they confirm that "currently" 15W 50 has a ZZDP level of 1300ppm.
Keep checking to make sure they maintain that level every time you purchase.

As always an interesting subject.
I believe you start with the API spec Porsche originally recommended which as Roger has said earlier will invaraibly be a 20w50 unles you live at the north pole or Calgary in which case you get a sump heater and therna, underwear!
There are very good 20w50 syn lubes around with good ZDDP content- I like Redline 20w50 when I can get it. Obviously Royal Purple gets good reviews.
Personally I feel there is quite a lot of nonsense talked when it comes to lube oils. When it comes to lubrication you either have enough or you do not. If you do not- you wear your engine and sooner or later lose it. When I could not get Redline any more the local agents advised me that Mobil 1 0w40 was now recommended for our cars- and that in our heat! Foolishly actually tried the stuff [for a short while]. During summer had it in the car I was scared to run the motor and kept it in the car port most of the time. The oil pressure at tickover was noticeably lower but to be fair it picked up to the 5 barg reading by about 2k rpm or so. I hardly took the motor past 4k rpm at the time. I did some research on the subject matter, picked up about the ZDDP issue but one also has to understand that film strength is what counts on the tappets- how you get it is less important.
Is Mobil 1 good enough? I do not know the answer to that one and would defer to those with experience. I quickly decided to go back to mineral oil 20w50. The motor loses a little power [not reallly noticeable I would suggest] and uses less oil.
My research suggested that ZDDP was actually invented by Castrol so this may explain why their GTX 20w50 has reportedly good levels. I did remove a cam cover and take a look at the cam lobes and tappets best I could and fortunately saw no worrysome signs of wear I have seen posted but...?.
Will I use Mobil 1 again -no. Doubtless it is a fine oil for engines designed to run it like the modern twin turbos.
The BMW E39 M5 to my knowledge has only 1 oil approved for use in it- Castrol 10w60 synthetic - I wonder why?
The modern mineral oils are far superior than they were when our cars were originally designed and synthetics even better but no matter what I will not run anything that is not 20w50 ever again,
I just hope no harm was done in that brief [very restrained] period.

I should add this.
I generally give three options on oil here. Royal Purple 20w-50, Mobile 1 15w-50, or Brad Penn 20w-50. I keep the first two in stock at all times and the later only if they go pick it up If they want Pennzoil or some other brand, they get to change it themselves or take it someplace to have it done. Not that others won't work well, I'm just a bit picky on what I deal with.

I have too much going on to have to "keep up" on changes to oil.
For the amount of oil changes I do, availability and price of BP thru Jegs works for me.
