Default ZDDP in oil

I have yet to see a jug of oil that lists the ZDDP content on it. I buy at the retail auto parts stores. I have never once seen this listing on a label, no matter which store I go to. How do you know what the content is when you buy your oil (unless you special order a royal purple or amsoil or whatever). I am only talking about retail.

You need at least 1100ppm of ZZDP. I use Royal Purple so there is no issue.

You will need to go online and find the MSDS, Material Safety Data Sheet. Every maker will publish them somewhere.

Here's an example, the Brad Penn 20W50 just because I had this one handy. The info is somewhat vague honestly, most makers consider the exact amounts proprietary.

Some oils do specify 'high zinc content", but they never say how much on the label. Amsoil, Castrol, and Valvoline say it on certain flavors of their oil.

Bill Ball included this in a post on the subject.

I use Mobil 1 15-50, and add a bit of Risoline Concentrated zinc empirically for a low volume additive.

I understand Rog, but my question is where do you find the info at retail on the label of a jug?

See above. How can I get the info off the jug without doing a major research project each time I want to change the oil, and without buying it online?

You wont find it on retail bottle. Thats what were saying...and there is no need to research.

Mobile1 15W50 is widely available.

There are other options, and widely discussed here as well.

The only problem with Mobile I is that they keep changing the level of ZZDP. Recently it dropped way below the level I find acceptable for our cars.
Better to pay a little extra and go with something like Royal Purple.

Shell Rotella diesel oil in every flavor has enough zinc for flat tappet cams. I use it in everything I own from my 440 Charger, to lawnmowers, to my 944. Its cheap and easy to get.

Do you have a link for this? AFAIK, even though the other Mobil 1 weights change around a lot, 15W-50 has always had and still has a good level of ZDDP.

They had stopped production for a while and the lesser weights did not have the adequate amount. Then they started to put the 15w-50 out again.
