Thanks for those pdf's, and Thanks for your help and support.

Add: Dissected filter. No components. No visible metal. There is on magnet test some adherence of a fine silt like metal. I've read that this can be considered acceptable as it is from the intermediate plates in the clutch pack. Is this correct ?

Parking pawl and other components appear to be intact to visual inspection. Vacuum unit of modulator back in (what a PITA to get the fore/anterior bolt in). Waiting for pan gasket to seat. Will check vacuum status from 'T' to modulator shortly. A little clean up is in order at this point.

Well Boys,
New Modulator. Filled appropriately with new ATF. No leaks.
And....
Wheels do not turn when put into gear while on lift bars. They try but no continuous motion even under throttle.
Now what to do. F@ck !

too bad the quick fixes are not doing anything to resolve.
Drop that tranny and rebuild or replace with a Greg new one......price check on Presque Isle

One more little maneuver. Vac line off the 'T' does not hold vacuum to the NEW modulator. Will replace with a new solid one piece line. If this doesn't work, then I'll throw the towel in. Have to take my son to Hockey practice. I'll try to play tomorrow.

What a strange problem, with a strange beginning. To loose both forward and reverse gears doesn't make a lot of sense....especially once it was determined that the axles were still attached and the ring gear moves the pinion.
You can take the entire valve body out and (along with the rear pressure section) send it to me, and I could take it apart, determine if there is anything that could possbily cause this, and go from there.
I thinking that one of the actual drive elements inside the transmission has sheared off.

Strange that a catastrophic failure could happen with absolutely no drama or sound affects. One minute it's perfect and the next minute it's like someone stole the transmission.

not quite though..........recall that the transmission was shifting hard and then the modulator was adjusted IIRC.........have to go back 12 pages

She was shifting hard so I adjusted the modulator. Since there was only a minimal improvement, I was going to check modulator vacuum status the weekend when it failed.
Yes, that was many pages ago. I find this problem vexing, to put it mildly. Car running very well, no fore warning, and complete non capture of gears upon starting up after a nice, mellow 60 mile drive on country back roads up here. The non capture in Park was not my fertile imagination. It did occur on two episodes. I was surprised when I followed the algorithms of the knowledgable, to find that the Park function appears normal. I still want to correct that which I can with the transmission (loss of vacuum integrity of the line from the 'T' to the modulator) before I step up the ante to Greg. I would feel deficient to myself if I didn't.

understood Greg.............wish I could help more but auto trannys (other than oil/filter etc) are beyond me
Now manual trannies/casettes, ratio etc etc I know very well..........hope its figured soon.

I got so tired of making excuses to customers why their "rebuilt" transmissions performed so poorly, that I had to do something, just to retain some level of sanity.
And then I took apart a transmision that had just been "rebuilt" to understand what the problems were....OMG.
I can tell you this....the "flat charge" rebuilders that most people use to rebuild these things make a hell of a lot more money at $2500 than I could ever make. Think generic $250 gasket set with clutches....the rest is pure profit!
I wouldn't even consider reusing some of the crap that they put back inside! Now, I completely understand why new transmissions are so wonderful and generic "rebuilds" are so awful. It's totally about what parts are used.
I now call these transmissions "repaired", not "rebuilt". Huge difference.....that very few people ever stop and think about.
Here's the best advice I can give anyone considering having an automatic transmission redone:
If the final bill isn't going to have a separate listing of parts and labor (but has a flat charge to rebuild), run as far and as fast as you can!
If they aren't going to "rebuild" the differential section, but just remove it, clean it, and re-install it...you are getting 1/2 of a job. Run away as fast and as far as you can.
Unless you have an extremely "damaged" transmission that can't be ecconomically rebuilt, never "exchange" it for a "rebuilt" unit. Run away as far and as fast as you can!
