928 Breaks the Sound Barrier.....
.........and a "subtle" reminder of one reason why Dyno Operators never want people standing behind a car on the dyno.
Oh, and also why steel plates just half way up a door behind a dyno is never enough for a 140mph+ "tiny pebble". Just glad all the students were out of the classroom and in the shop watching the dyno runs safely to the sides of the 928.
John, sorry again about the glass and thanks again for being a good sport!
Cheers,
Dave

I'm always amazed at the ricer meets how many people want to stand in front or behind the cars when they're being ran. NO WAY !! I'll be off to the side somewhere, thank you !!!

you never want to stand in the plane of rotation either, I will take a picture of the ceiling of my shop, when I moved in i noticed that there was a almost perfect impression of a wrench in the drywall on the ceiling, looks to be about a 3/4", that would have left a mark if it had hit any one.
Must have got into the fan or a belt.

Me too!! I had already done 2 runs and this happened at the end of the 3rd...right as I lifted off the throttle at 6200 rpms (in 4th gear) and slipped it into neutral I hear the guy that was yelling "rock, rock".....I thought he was saying "rock'n" about the dyno run at first.
I have been using this Dyno for over 10 years and IIRC John has been there running it a bunch of years before that. In all that time it has only happened once before today...they made a plywood shield to put up after the first time a few years ago but had gotten out of the habit of using it.
Of course being at large Automotive Vocational School he just picked up the phone and called the Maintenance Department and told them he needed some glass replaced....he wouldn't even consider letting me pay for it.
Great people to deal with and for me well worth the 2 hour drive (one way) to go visit them. The added bonus is they are a Vocational School and don't sell anything and the integrity of their Dynojet service is beyond reproach. I don't know how many times I have seen John smile as he talks about most people always being disappointed with the results of their dyno runs there...he just laughs and says "it is what it is", no matter if it is the "Ricer" crowd, the Professional Dragster guys, or even some of the local Nascar or Dirt Track guys.
Cheers,
Dave

It was a stock 88 S4 5-speed "Driver Grade" with 109K miles.. see thread : https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...r-grade-2.html
Was dropped off here a few weeks ago and I hadn't even had the chance to look at it or even start it until yesterday when I left. While I was a little nervous to just hop in it, drive 2 hours, run it hard on the dyno and then (hopefully) drive it back 2 hours...I said to myself, "it's a 928 it will be fine". Long story short I walked out, fired it up and pulled away. I had a wonderful drive on some of my favorite back roads for a fun 2 hours and arrived to the dyno on time with no issues.
Drove right inside the automotive department, backed on to the dyno, they strapped it down and away we went. 3 runs back to back, no muss, no fuss, no noticeable smoke or anything while on the dyno (except for the "rock" drama).
Chatted with John a few minutes as he printed out the runs and saved the file on disk and drove back 2 hours...although a lot more spirited and relaxed than the drive down due to even more confidence in it. :-)
It was just a baseline session and wasn't looking for anything but finding out "it is what it is"....
Cheers,
Dave

But , as I said the drive was the fun part... nice 2 lane "ribbons of black" through the mountains and then rolling hills with mostly very sparsely populated areas.
Anytime you can have 4 hours of "928 Bliss" with little to no traffic on roads like these in the mountains and foothills of NC/SC on a beautiful sunny fall day like yesterday...is always a GREAT 928 Day! :-)
