Panamera drivers
amazing, I saw 3 of them on the way home from work today. I see them all the time around here now. I have yet to have one wave or even acknowledge me when I'm in my 928. In fact, today on the drive home, coming up on a merge point, I needed to get in and the lady next to me driving the Panamera wouldn't let me in - she sped up! I thought to myself, "F" it, and I jumped in front of her anyway. I figured she didn't know my car was a Porsche so she could study the big bold letters imprinted on that glorious 928 rear. Also, she certainly had no appreciation for the heritage of hers. Its like Cayennes, same thing. Those people are a breed apart, not connected the way we and the 911/986/987/944/951/924/914/356 crowd are to the marque.

Yep.
The 996, 997, GT3, Cayenne crowd won't even give me a flash or raise a hand up on the steering wheel.
I can recognize an older 911 from a distance, and on several occasions we've flashed each other at almost the same time when on a single lane heading towards each other. Up where I am there aren't many Porsches, but at a high school track meet (which always has a big turnout from many townships) we Porsche guys park en bloc, and have gotten to know each other. We all have the older classics. The crowd loves it.
Hey Hey !!
This is my 928 Post...
Fitting post... and... 'The crowd loves it'.

I cruised with a Panamera for a while on the way back from Spring Fling in April, but once I hit 100 the driver dropped back and I never saw them again. Shame as that was a lovely stretch of 183 from Gonzales up to I-10.
I doubt if anyone comes up to check out a Panamera at a gas station or gives a thumbs up at a light. An everyday occurrence in a 928 ...

I have the opposite experience. I've had 2 different occasions where I was getting gas (weird always happen at the gas station) and a Panamera driver stops to ask what model what year etc.. Once they find out it has a v8 both drivers were curious about getting 928.s
I've had panamera drivers flash their lights at me also. Maybe its just the area of the country you are in..

I think it has a lot to do with the age of the driver... and of course if they are true Porsche lovers or just purchased their car because some magazine said it drives well.
I drive both my 928 and my 924 and get thumbs up and "cool car" all the time. Mid 1990s Porsche always seem to recognize and wave to me... and I to them. All the newer models frequently have a different breed of driver who could care less about the heritage of the car they are driving. Ah well. Their loss.

I have a Cayenne and I very seldom get any kind of acknowledgement while driving. I don't know if it's because it doesn't stand out enough, or if the other drivers don't consider it 'Porsche' enough, or if they are so used to being ignored by the average Cayenne driver that they've given up. It very well may be the latter, since I seldom get anything from other Cayenne drivers in my Cayenne or my 951.
My 951 is a different story: waves, honks, people coming up, panties on the rearview mirror; the whole nine yards...
FWIW: I intend to be one of those Panamera drivers someday, and I'll wave like I'm on a Mardi Gras float!

I was in Europe for 2 weeks earlier in the month (The Netherlands and Belgium) and saw probably 5 or 6 Panameras on the highways in just one weekend of driving around. They were always in the left lane and always doing 100 plus. The last one I saw was a bright red GTS and it was impressive. I think in Europe they are being used properly, an over here, well maybe a different type of buyer, and of course not as much opportunity to open them up. I got good at recognizing them in my rear view mirror (and moving over quickly).

i have mixed reactions...
I have had the guy that buys the newer 911 because (996-7...whatever) it is a status symbol.. they are the ones that look down the nose at my 928.
i have also had driver that buys the 928 for the driving experience and engineering.. they seem to be the ones that love our cars..
seems that most guys with older 911's like the 928. but the guy that announces to everyone that he drives a Porsche is above us.

It has nothing to do with you being in a 928. It happens to me in my 964 and turbo too. The days of the big Porsche family are over. The enthusiast is no longer the average buyer of the new cars.
We are finding even when dealerships pay for PCA memberships it is like pulling teeth to get them to join any events or renew after the first year. Occasionally you get a new owner who is enthusiastic but for the most part they enjoy the ride until the lease is up or a newer model is out.
Occasionally you get the old waive or flash of the lights from the old timer who just purchased a new model but for the most part they don't understand why you are flashing or waiving to them.
Oh well I still waive or flash but I find when I flash a 928 in my Cayenne they don't respond either.

Local dealer (Virginia) had a Panamera parked indoors on the way to baggage claim at the Richmond airport for a while. I would stand nearby and watch planeloads of folks walk past it.
