Good deal Doc. The paint should be an easy fix. CONCOURS paint (without bodywork) can be attained for under 2000 dollars.

No problem but I think you can do better.

You might want to phone this car and see if it is still for sale,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-...item20ca2c6fe6

Looks like a better car for a little more money.

+928

However, this might be nougat metallic, instead of cassisrot.

Really? How is he going to deal with paint peeling from where it was masked-off? Some of the pictures showed pretty large areas of detachment and peeling. You'll have to replace that paint somehow, but the materials alone cost more than $500.

If you start removing and replacing any trim, things add-up quickly. At least $2500 in trim and rubber parts alone, in that case.

They are not THAT rare... But then again, there is a color very similar to it, and many "think" that's Cassisrot when it isn't.

Really. Here's how it works. I have a DA and several other air sanders if needed. I sand the bad spots down. Then, we take off the gas door and have the color hand matched by the paint shop with Cassisrot as the base color. Then I work with the paint guy to tape the sections that I sand down, and use a detail gun or even an airbrush to get the color on. After that, he puts three coats of clear on and we take the tape off, and use some heavy cutting compound to buff it, then work finer until it matches the rest of the cars gloss. I've already had him look at the pics and he's telling me his labor is $350. He has lots of clear no charge, and I can get by with a quart of color which is $87. So, I figure about 5-6 hours of my prep, then $450 of his final prep and color, plus some compound, and a final clean up.

As I said, we won't be making this concours. This will be a working mans DD kind of paint job, with the existing paint cleaned off the trim and rubber bits.

I doubt this is a nougat car with a burgundy interior. The typical color combo was Cassisrot with burgundy int and maybe burgundy carpet. To have a nougat ext with burgundy int would be very, very strange. I doubt it was ever offered, or even ordered custom.

the seats can be recovered by Hi Tech Vinyl for $150 each carry in with leather matched vinyl, or I can go full leather for +$230 more. I just had my 968 seats estimated last week.

Yes - Cassisrot S4 cars are rather rare.

This is Texas where we have real businesses doing real work, on real cars with competition. I've had several cars and a boat through Hi Tech Vinyl and their work is plenty good enough for a 25YO 928.

I checked out the S4 in Salt Lake before the owner cosigned it. I got him down to $4,500 but didn't take it because it wasn't running at the time. I figured it was only the ECU that needed replacing but I wasn't about to take that risk. I haven't checked it out since but it has a big gash in the rocker panel and it is lacking service history for the last 6 years. Let me know if anyone is interested I have the owners contact info. He told me that when he consigned it they promised him at least 7k. Also I checked it out in April so it's been for sale for a long time here.

Kidding of course. Good luck, I hope you can save her. Guess we'll both be writing a few checks in the future. Keep us posted.

We'ull, I didn't get it - yet.

So, I called and we yakked a bit. The AC is non-op, he has no records, and won't take less than $5999 for it. Also, he's insisting on collecting CA sales tax unless it is shipped out of state on a comm carrier. If I want to pick it up in person, or have someone drive it off, he gets the CA sales tax. He was mumbling something about a new dodge to avoid or minimize tax on used car sales out of state. Wouldn't clarify, but absolutely wouldn't let it pick up in state without paying CA tax.

Says he has a 'buyer' coming over from NV next week. When I asked him if he advised the guy about the tax deal he prevaricated some. I worked from $4k up to $5300 and he rejected all of it. $5999 plus tax out the door, or $5999 in cash and he'll load it on a comm hauler with an out of state destination.

So - who's the NV buyer. You can't hide from me forever!!

Hang in there doc. Seller does not want to lose money, but will have to in the end as you are probably the only buyer for this car. Hope you can save it. I am in and out of that area (SFV) about once per month and could gather more intel for you if you have anything specific.

OK Karl. If the NV guy doesn't get it, I'll go back at him late next week. The only job I want done before final is the TBF check. As for the tax deal, I'll have him put it on one of those truck trailer with a DOT and they can drop it at the Flying J just east of Blythe.

Doc,

Check to see if TX and CA have reciprocal sales tax. I know CA and AZ do as I have purchased two vehicles that way from dealers in CA in the last 18 mos. Additionally, there is a thing in CA called a One Way permit that is good for 24 hours that a dealer can use. No sales tax necessary. I bought a third CA car from a dealer that way and drove it straight AZ.

Truth is you could have the vehicle picked up by a tow truck and hauled a few blocks away and you could unload it and head for the border. Not legal, I am not advising this, but there are others who have done/do this. With reciprocal sales tax not an issue for me.
