The guy that owns it only hauls it around on a trailer the miles are just related to drive it on and of the trailer

The original owner had a small car collection. He died and left the collection to his wife who then sold it to the mechanic that was taking care of this 79. The car was in an accident, totaled, and off it went to an insurance auction. Tass purchased it and stored it for approx 3 years in his barn and was to busy to get to this project. Tass then put it up for sale on RL and I bought it and had it shipped it to TX where it has been stored indoors ever since. I have never heard it run, but Tass did approx 3 years ago and said it sounded great. For more info, search for the "Just Peacy OB project" T

I would think it might be worth quite a lot if you really waited for the right buyer. It would have to be someone who had a very clean low mile '79 that needed a motor (perhaps sitting too long with bad coolant), and wanted a very nice, very original replacement. I recently built a motor for my '79. I think my costs were something like:

factory new block with pistons and rings $400
head gaskets $200
Euro S top end used $800
machine work on Euro S top end $300
main and rod bearings ($800?)
turn crank $150

of course the first line item was a once in a life time lucky break, but still the whole deal was probably around $2500, although that was before I ran into injection problems from the whole thing sitting so long.

$1000. I'll pick it up. You have first right of refusal on a resale from me and my estate, should it come to that. But I'll never sell it (I've never sold any of the cars). Will put it in a worthy early 5 speed body.

Edit to say --- I think its "worth" much more than $1000 to the right buyer at the right time.

Guy here in SoCal had a 4.5 rebuilt by a good shop, clean up the heads etc, never had fluids in it waiting to go into his 928, but sold the car the buyer didn't want a spare motor. He has been looking for about $1k for it for the last 3 years.

Regardless of the source no 30 year old motor that has had coolant in it should be dropped into anything. Coolant related damage is too unpredictable, leaky dried out seals, just no point in not refreshing all that stuff while its out.

I still think an original engine, with 12,000 miles on it, is worth more than 10K, which is about what it takes to rebuild one without many problems, by a professional.

If I ran into an engine that the guy only wanted 1K for, I wouldn't expect too much....you can't buy a set of bearings, rings, and a gasket set, for that....

I always get the name wrong, Ollie or Olies, did the rebuild years ago, and I assume the owner paid a good bunch more than $1k to have it done. After somebody sells a nice 4.5 motor we will know what one is worth, but I haven't seen that happen yet.

Saving the $700 on not needing rings is a pretty good case for this engine.

Couldn't imagine you would need new bearings.

Just a gasket set.

But you never really know until you pull the heads and pan.
