... and That was my first thoughts. Car has only been in my garage and at the paint shop. Not that I have some if this stuff dry, it does not look like sugar. I am thinking paint dust.... I know he had one painter leaver that 1st worked on the car... This happened at his shop so he and I are going to have a very candid conversation next week....
good thing is, that super duper filter for the intake pump replacement worked like a champ! The normal filter is pretty clean... I have cleaned the stainless in tank filter and I am on my way to buy a external filter here in a few min... Fuel at the engine looks nice and clean and I have been all over that this weekend...
It was not that bad when i got the car and the fuel had jelled. I cleaned the tank completely with the stuff here folks recommended ...
or any tank...
Had the same.
Now I would add additives to loosen the 'gunk' and get it out to the fuel filter. After this being done, then I would change out the dirty filter.
Add a bottle of Techron and 6 oz. of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) to each 1/2 tank of fuel (Stan's {MrMerlin}) recommendations). Do this 5-6 times, meaning you'll put some miles on
This really worked well for me. After going through many diagnostics I ended having fuel starvation at the outlet.

I can tell you she ran like a champ when the fuel got to the motor with the 044... I am glad I put in the weaker pump, made teh problem stand out to me at 2AM last night...
I am not a happy camper and the paint shop owner and I will be coming to some agreements on how I will be happy when this is over...
.. now when I get her back on the road, I will be happy again, but damn, I have had to go through this puppy twice for the same relative issue... at least I dot have to put another timing belt in .... yet

Fixed 89 S4 cutout while driving
Well, that was fun. Nothing like fixing the same problem twice... the long way.. geeez
So she is all back together, clean filters, clean tank, additives as recommended and she run down the road like a 928 should... ran through all the gears and got into the rev limiter intentionally to see if I could run higher RPMs... and she did as designed...
Now I just need to fix the other stuff the damn painters put together wrong... bastards...
Thank you everyone for their help..
Final conclusion:
Junk in the tank starved the engine for gas. Cleaned all fuel systems and everything is good like it should be...

That is one sad looking filter element it is a wonder you got anything through it at all. hopefully it stopped anything getting into the fuel pump and external filter never mind the fuel ines and injectors heaven forbid. If it had you would still know about it. I guess the question here is how degraded the external filter is.
Have you any idea yet what that crud is? Perhaps you should have it analysed if it is not prohibitively expensive to do so. Maybe some clown put too much sunflower oil in the brew!

Wow Emerald, that just sucks. Nothing worse than trying to chase issues related to vandalism. Did you remove the tank in order to clean it the first and second time?

New lines, cleaned injectors, cleaned tank, engine flushed, etc etc… Only thing I have not done is pull the motor and work the block, but there is no reason to.. she looked new.
That and it ran great, then it did not... Step Function tells me something added all at once... at least that is how I would build the fault tree on this pupply

I am going to take her for a longer run today to make sure that what was happened before at the 30-45 min mark is truly gone....
Thanks... lots of great speculating from the masters on this site...
New plan is to get her to Sharktoberfest...
