I wish you a lot of luck on this project. I was not nearly as brave. I purchased mine new.

Been a crazy busy week at my jobs but I did manage to carve out a couple hours of "me" time with the 928.

I did stupid things. The car is located at my work for the time being so I bought some 928 mini projects home. I decided that I would have my hand at keying the locks since no two locks use the same key

Wayne Strutt had an awesome DIY on the board and was kind enough to email the PDF to me. It was EASIER than I ever expected and I enjoyed fiddling with lock plates and itty bitty springs at my kitchen table.

I also have been readying my newly acquired cluster for install. Hope to install that this week and do a full test. I am not sure I know which plug goes where since all three plugs have 12 connections. Hints appreciated.

My game plan is to continue to finish off the wiring projects and test drive on the road within the month. After a shakedown, I am going to change out the fluids, timing belt and fuel lines.

What a neat, fun car!

Another fun couple hours on the 928. Installed the cluster, had a temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, speedo and some idiot lights. No tach or signal indicators. I pulled in again for contact cleaning and bulb recheck.

The exciting news was getting the headlights to work! Required a new motor and a new relay but they are working as good as new. I replaced the c clips as well to prevent needing a radiator.

Keep in mind, all these repairs are for "shakedown" purposes only. I fully plan a complete tear down and rebuild. Just trying to sort everything out still.

Lots of learning left to do!

Total hours is 25 hours. Just a few bucks under a $1000 invested.

This thing is so tatty, I have to be motivated I like the challenge and besides, this is my hobby so it has to be fun! I am thinking it could be roadworthy in another 45 days or so. I only get to futz with it about 5 or 6 hours per week. Thanks for the encouragement!

Default Gauge Cluster Repair

Managed to pick up a 80 instrument cluster from my beast. Did some testing last week and just did a complete disassembly on it. It actually was in real good shape. I crimped and resoldered the rivets for the tach and cleaned all the contacts. I am in the process of testing the circuits.

Even though my reflectors were pretty decent. I decided to add more reflective material to the hoods for the dash illumination. I am also gonna to add a litlle sealing foam when it is assembled to seal the light housings.

I have read about using hobby foil but decided to use a product that I have used for taillight reflectors in the past. Its in the boy racer area of your local autoparts store and is basically a metallic decal or tape. Easily to work with and great adhesion. The results are great, noticeably better when combined with three watt bulbs. Just be sure to leave the little slits on either side of the bulb housings open to help with heat buildup.

Hi Guys! Been a while since I posted over her in 928 land. Since I last posted, I did get the 81 running and driving. Still looks horrible though, I needed to take a break to work on a 5.0 for my son over the winter.

BUT I just couldn't resist buying this 79........Very, very original right down to the spare bulb kit! Totally unmodfied. No sunroof, 5 speed and 72k on the odo. It needs lots of love as it has been off the road since 2002 but I like it alot. Not sure which one is going to get the star treatment and which is going to be parts.

Congratulations...maybe in your son's lifetime 928's like these will either be crushed or restored and the market will correct itself.

Yes, both are running. Do not part them. Looking good though. Much further along than I am.

I have to be honest.......I try to get into all my cars "right" so when I get rid of them, I don't lose my shirt. With that said, these 928s are my hobby and the value doesn't concern me quite as much. I will say that having access to so many parts has been invaluable. I would be broke if I didn't get accumulate so many spares. I am going to probe around this 79 a bit this weekend and will post more pics. Besides the aftermarket 1980's cassette deck, its really amazingly original. I am missing a spare tire and a rear hatch latch, otherwise it is all there and looks like it was Porsche serviced for much of its life
