good news, when you get past the wiring, check all the high pressure fuel lines particularly around the engine bay before you attempt a start.number 1 cause of fires/death of these cars!

Took an hour of my schedule today and my son and I rewired the male end of the 14pin plug. The Mercedes unit worked great. Pins are bigger so I needed to do a little soldering. I didn't reloom the ends of the wires yet as I don't know what diagnostics lie ahead of me. Female end is next

I also squared away the CE. It was missing a few relays including fuel pump.

After wiring, I am gonna to drain fuel and add fresh and do a start attempt. I would love to get a cluster into the car prior to doing that. I have a guy on CL who is working a deal with me on one.

And the news is.....

Car starts, surprising runs great. Very quiet and smooth and started on the first crank. How is that even possible? Its been sitting 9 years! Amazing! I am thrilled.......but there are plenty more problems.

First off, I should elaborate, I started the car by jumping #14 to the post. The key will not start the car, all I hear is a faint click from the starter when using the key. By using the jumper, starts immediately and runs great.

I am looking for a wiring pin out for the ignition switch. Its butchered pretty good.

Sad part about all this is that two previous owners could never get this car to crank, they hacked up a lot trying to diagnose it. The solution was simple, follow step by step and start with the simple items such as grounds.

This forum is a life saver!! Thansk to all!

Great project! Wish I was that skilled...I know there is someone on this board that sells a CD with the wiring diagrams etc...
In the meantime maybe these will help?

Thanks DJF1! I do have the diagram but its not real clear on placement but surfing the boards a bit more, I think I found the pin outs I needed for the switch.

I am curious if the alarm system would allow the car to start with the jumper but not with the ignition?

As you can see from the background, I like parts

It was sold as an 82 but is actually an 81. 5spd, sunroof.
My condolences.

Great save, excellent project.
Congrats on getting it running!
These cars are amazing.
So many go down-for-the-count because of some simple electrical problem.

I literally work a block away from it. I passed it daily. Picked it up for 800 dollars

May start a new thread for this question but here it goes......

WallyP has offered great advice for no crank, no start conditions and I have followed them thus far. Car starts instantly when key is on and I jump 14 to the hot post. Immediately after turning off, car will start with key, once....then no more until I jump again.

When key is "start position" I have power at the "bridge" on the CE as evidenced by a bright test light. When I do same test on 14, I get a very dim light. Suggestions? Thanks to all!!
