Running without smog pump?
Well, I drove from Fresno to Calgary on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. All went well (give or take the usual road delays) except that my smog/air pump seems to have thrown a bearing on the third day. It was wanting to squeal and burn the belt etc. so I cut the belt off. I don't want to have this car worked on in Calgary if possible. Will it be OK to run without the smog pump for a while?

Just aids in the hydrocarbon oxidation process in the catalytic converter, like normal combustion the oxidation of hydrocarbons needs oxygen.
Although i think OB's had a more complex AIR system where there was air nozzles integrated into the head just after the exhaust valve and in the port, in addition to the pipework that goes to the cats. Someone correct me on this if i'm wrong.

I recall reading here that the air injection is primarily used during cold engine conditions. There's a valve on the later cars that opens and closes to send air down to the cats ... so from an emissions standpoint anytime that valve's closed it wouldn't matter if the pump were there or not.

Air pump. . . hmmm . . I seem to remember removing one of those and sticking in a box in the garage. Works great there.

I cut my AP belt a few weeks ago. The bearing got really noisy one morning and would eventually seize. Too much racket, so I just cut it. Timing was a bit stressful because I had to do my last SMOG test (last year for 88's here in WA state). Passed with flying colors. Normally there isn't a visual inspection like CA or other states or provinces perhaps.
I'm about to remove it because the bearing is totally seized and cannot be turned by hand.

Well I've been running without the smog pump for over a week, and I must say the car is smoother and quieter than ever. There must have been some issue with that pump going bad for a while. This engine is running like it is free of a dead weight now.

But... our refined 928 engines are different.
Actually, i've heard of one 928 owner passing an E-test without cats on a very well running engine, or maybe it was just myth.

No "yet" in Wyoming. Unlike the "less-than-golden" state, we know enough to maintain a strong conservative government. The libs have no foothold here.

Why does every one give LA air a bad rap?
Every time I have been there the last couple of winters on the way to Colorado to ski, its been crystal clear.
Have I been lucky or is the smog better these days?
