Default Looking for New 245/45-16 Tires

Need to replace discontinued Fuzion Zri 245/45-16, 94W, 320-A-A rear tires on 1987 S4 with tires of similar index, rating, grades and $100-$175 cost per tire. Reject Bridgestone, Toyo, Continental, Kumho, Maxxis, Sumitomo and Yokohama as high priced and/or with very low UTQG. Considering Primewell, Roadwell or Nexen which are all 94W and either 280 or 340 AA-A graded. Comments or suggestions welcomed.

Why are you buying the cheapest tires you can find? Maybe retreads if you can find them? See if you can buy used, that would be the cheapest bet.

You have bugger all choice in the matter

You might find old-stock Fuzion's if you call a lot of tire places.
Toyo discontinued the T1-R (I have an email from their Customer Relations dept. after I sent them an e-mail in March)
Nexen make 245/45/16 but they don't have a matching front (225/50/16), although other tires in their range come in that size.

The only street tire I can find currently being made in the 245/45/16 size with matching fronts is, I believe, the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 (although tirerack's search is a bit broken).

There was a thread of Bridgestone making the rear tires again, not sure if they did.

Good luck finding them and more so if you find matching 225s for the front. Every 944 Turbo S and 930 owner is in the same boat and has had limited luck so far.

Just put the 245/50-16 you can get just about in any brand. Your speedometer won't be off much. I did it for years and then had some fusions. They suck by the way unless it is hot and dry.

If you are not that concerned about the look of the higher sidewall or the slight reduction in handling which given your criteria is probably not a big deal. Just buy the cheapest 245x50x16 you can find, you only need high speed rated tires if you EVER drive at high speed.
Used tires are a gamble since no way to know if they were driven over a curb and the structure damaged not all that safe. And remember that at 6 years of age the tires are breaking down due to age alone so new tires tread need only last for 6 years ,which for some seldom driven cars means high tread wear ratings mean little.

You are correct; and they're a bit pricey. The rears are out of stock right now but my set is supposed to ship from TireRack on 6/29.

I definitely wish I had bought Bridgestone instead of Toyo for that size. I have Proxes T1R on the 86.5 w/ clubsports. Those were my only two choices a few years ago..guess it has gotten worse.

Hey, look at me, I bought a car that when new cost as much as a house, so let me find the cheapest crap tires for it... UNREAL what some people will do to a 928... I don't put $300 a pop tires on my car, or usually even $200 a pop, but I don't mind putting a decent name brand tire in the $200 per neighborhood on my cars either...

James, you are a "special case". Put new tires on all your cars, then no need for new tires until all of them rot. Tires on one getting a little worn? Pick a car with better tread remaining. Of course, it's a bit painful to replace them ALL at one time...

I go through the cheap or great discussion internally every five years or so. Then buy great tires. On other cars, I've strayed from the True Path, and been stuck with the noisy, rough-riding, slippery junk until they wore out. Never again. 16" getting to hard to find? 17-18" wheels are pretty readily available, and we are back to a decent tire selection. Baby is due for shoes again soon. Three years since last rears, still OK. Five years since last fronts, getting to be time again. PS2's again, no doubt.
