Default Front fuel hose warning / reminder

This was already covered in some post, but somehow it didn't catch my attention well enough. On my S4 (and I imagine GT, GTS, maybe 86.5) the front fuel line bteween the two fuel rails rubs against the oil filler neck. If it rubs long enough the hose will burst.

I replaced mine about three years ago, presumably the new versions are longer to prevent rubbing, but I discovered today the hose was nicked. Ever so slightly, but a start nonetheless. A $30 part versus your prized possession on fire. I'm not taking chances.

I vaguely remember seeing some pics with protecting sleeving applied but can't find them. Here's an old post with another remedy: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...uel-lines.html

Don't be a sucker. Check and replace yours!

I don't think Porsche ever made that hose longer. I make all my replacement hoses long enough for the installer to "shape" them so that they will not touch the filler neck.

Roger at 928 R Us stocks these, with my "new style" crimp ends and Teflon hose. Guaranteed, for the life of the vehicle!

If you route the hose properly, it will not rub. Requires a slight amount of twist with tightening the uniion nuts with a flare wrench.

The factory fuel jumper hose is protected with an outer protective cover, so what your seeing is, just the cover, not the pressure hose which is much smaller.

Good to know, thanks!

That's the one. Some hose manufacturers also supply hose protection stuff like that.

And yet, virtually every single hose, factory installed, or not, has a "groove" worn into it, from the filler neck rubbing on it.

You suppose the stock hose "shrinks", over time?

Initially I placed my line in the manner where there was no contact. Over time there was contact. I then placed three large black wire ties strategically under where the filler neck contact point would be. The hard smooth surface has acted well against the filler edge for two years now.

If they did not change the length of the hose, then yes it does shrink.

I took care of that problem and put your hoses on mine, so I am on my second set of replacement fuel hoses.

That hose may have some clearance in the static state- engine off, but I wonder how much engine vibration contributes to the contact when it's running. From all experience this needs to be corrected with a better hose installation, I think:

Greg, Aryan,

What's below the protective rubber cover is actually plastic (polyamide) tubing. So its not a hose per say.

On the hose shrinkage topic..... that sounds like a possibility. When you strip back the protective cover the polyamide tubing appears to be heat shrinked at the factory. However, according to Porsche, the polyamide tubing is said to be pressed on instead. The Polyamide tubing is pretty tough stuff, but likely shrinks with age and temperature.

I'm just not sure how much that shrinkage might be. More likely to me is, the hose was just in most cases improperly installed at the factory with an interference fit.

The factory installed hose on my '90 S4 only had a small dent in the protective cover.

Great thread. I just took my front fuel line and rear rubber fuel line out. The front had the nick up top and on the bottom. The rear fuel line was shot.
