Let's see if this works: These are the suppliers/sponsors here. They really know the 928 and can give advice as well. I would start with them. Search Jim Moorehouse, he sells a set of CDs that have PET and WSM. Read the new visitor thread. Welcome.
That's great news about being able to reuse the gas tank. It didn't crack anywhere. Would the weight of gas be enough to pop it back into shape? I have a compressor and wouldn't mind giving that a try. Do you have to drop the tank to use it or is there a make shift rig to pop it out with compressed air from the filler neck? I have not looked under the car yet, but I would bet my money that the problem was a fuel leak due to how strong and angry that fire wanted to get in a hurry. Does the fuel line run under the passenger side? and is it a metal line or rubber fuel hose?
In my case it did pop back with the weight of the gas. Maybe not the smartest idea afterwards because the tank could have had cracks. It might be safer to use compressed air. Very easy to do, not tank drop needed. See the pics and vid in this post: https://rennlist.com/forums/7729561-post20.html
The fuel lines run under the passenger side, it is a metal line. Goes over into rubber in the middle of the engine bay on the right side. See here for more: https://rennlist.com/forums/7744322-post28.html
If I were you I would inspect the entire metal line. Not unheard of them being crushed from bad jack use (jacking the car up at the wrong spot, hitting curbs..).
That car looks better than mine I think you need to get that garage cleaned up and invite the local 928 guys over. Have plenty of beer, tools, pizza and internet access with the WSM and Rennlist available and go at it.
You guys are welcomed here any time. I can keep the beer, barbeque, internet and pizza flowing all day. I'm Italian, we like to feed people and I definitely could use the help. My garage is metal and old. The garage you see in the pics belongs to the previous owner. I wouldn't make the mistake of putting another car in there. Last time I did, mice got into the interior of my 65 GTO and destroyed the headliner within two days...I do all the work needed outside in my driveway. I have the electric, air tools etc...
Congratulations,
I wish my paint looked as good as yours!
Do you have a hinged/adjustable wing, hard to tell from the photos?
The 87S4 is a unique and great 928, you will soon forget about all the pain and love just driving it.

"Installed new K&N air filter"
The oil from the filter has been known to cause problems with the MAF. You might do a search on the subject.
Got a lot done today!!! Worked on the car from 5:45 am to 6:00 pm
Changed the fuel hoses with Roger's kit.
Checked for fuel leaks (none)
Rewired all the affected wires from minor fire.
Re-installed the center console.
Found a few more ground points, cleaned their connections/contacts.
Changed out all the fuses with fresh one's.
Cleaned the throttle body.
Checked for spark.
Installed new K&N air filter.
Cleaned motor & undercarriage with "Engine Brite Gel".
Fixed the sunroof, which did not work when I bought the car. Works great now!
Cranked her over and she started right up, stronger than ever! She lives!!!!
What a great day...
Well done! Busy day. Had a similar one yesterday. Be sure to post when and if you're hosting a wrenching party. I'd love to check out that GTO! Plus, if you get the car sorted in time, bring it to Watkins Glen in October for the PCA drivers ed classes.

Yes, thank you I read that and was aware of the problem before with my other cars. I have a quick remedy...What I did was after spraying the filter with oil, I blew out the excess with compressed air. I have been doing this since the K&N filters have come out and never had a problem. I think the problem is that people soak them with too much oil (have seen it many times) and it ends up dripping into the mass air..

My car was produced on Febuary 1987. I looked at the wing when I bought the car after reading that early 87 S4's have the hinged wing, but I dont think mine is unless I missed something. It seems to be permanently affixed.
