Default Manual trans fluid

Hi all, did a search several times and i didnt get my question answered. I put Redline 75W90NS in my trans a while back and it is coming up on needing a change and i was wondering if i could go back to a GL-5 non-syn after using Redline syn. The reason for this is tranny leaks. I would appreciate any help you have for me. I also looked at Val 75W90 and a couple others but they do not state NON Limited slip is redline the only option?

thanks

Andy

No reason you can't switch back to non-synthetic. FWIW, the Swepco non-synthetic gear oil has been mentioned as a good oil for the early manual boxes. Just the right characteristics for the synchros.

OK to swap to non-synthetic oil for the Porsche-syncro box was the OP's question.

Yup. That's why I won't warranty a new transmission against leaks if it has had Redline inside. That stuff slips right past the seals.

Use Mobil 1 LS...75/90. You can buy it at Auto Zone, Kragen's, etc. It will not leak and should stop the current leaking problems, in a short time.

Another vote for Mobil one.

Kendall used to make a really great 75/90 dino oil. I think they stopped making it (or my supplier stopped carrying it), but I used it for many many years, with fantastic results. You had to add an additive (Kendall made this, too) to work properly with a limited slip.

Kendall, before they were "bought out" made some of the best dyno oil products on this planet. Brad Penn 20-50 is apparently the same formula as the old Kendall "green" 20/50 engine oil. Great oil.

I still use their limited slip additive when I have a limited slip with very high "break-away" torque....or with limited slips that have had the incorrect oil in them and the customer is not ready to take apart.

You might want to try some of the BG MGC in one.

FWIW I tried Swepco on the recommendation of DEVEK. Swepco rendered my car almost undriveable.

I was experiencing problems up-shifting from 1st to 2nd or down-shifting into 2nd. 1st I went from dino oil to Mobile 1 - no noticeable improvement. Next tried Swepco - made the problem much worse. Drained the Swepco and went to Redline - almost like a rebuild in a bottle. (By the way, this was in my '82 with the Porsche synchros.)

Now after 8 years, I'm again experiencing shifting problems - so I guess it's time to address the underlying problem.

I don't have Greg's experience with multiple transmissions, but I've been using Redline in both of my cars without any leakage problems. You may want to address the underlying problem by replacing the leaking seals. In any event DO NOT waste your money on Swepco - it's crap.

Wow, this thread has me concerned now. i was just about to change my man trans fluid in my '78 5-speed Euro.

No leaks in the rear now, but i don't want to encourage any either.. I was planning on using (already bought) Castrol Syntec 75/90. Any known issues with this??!!

Thanks for all your input guys, on the Mobile 1 is that a syn or conventional? My tranny had non syn before and had minor weeping now and for many years its horrible. Can you let me know the exact num on the bottle. I just dont want this same issue again.

thanks

Synthetic. The Mobil website: http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...LS_75W-90.aspx

FWIW - I switched to Royal Purple in the differential in January and no weeping, drips, etc. But in my case, all was dry before so I don't know if it would help a leak once it's started. I also don't know what was in it from the PO.
