Default A broken auto transmision spring

1987 S4 Auto..150,000 miles

I decided to change the tranny fluid and filter before i drove to the swap meet..When I dropped the pan, i noticed half of a spring hanging down just above the filter...I will try to add a photo..I didnt find the other half, and this is the first time i have had the pan off..So, i am hoping that this is not new..i have always had hard shift points, but thought this was the disconnected modulator.
=================================================
I was changing the filter on my 87 928 auto today and noticed what appeared to be half of a spring was missing..I am having trouble identifying it..I believe it is item number 17...part number 7229930010 .I have taken a photo of it...i did not find the other half so i am assuming it has been missing for a while..it looks like it attaches to the item number 2, part number 1262700570.. 4th gear regulating valve..
================================================

any help identifying this is greatly appreciated....

had a great time at the swap meet..ended up getting a complete interior for my 924S, a radiator for the 928, heater control, exhaust hangers, and lots of other assorted treasures..Didn't have time to look at the cars tho...
I didnt find my chin spoiler or my RMB..Gonna put the cat bypass on as soon as i get the tranny sorted...

John

I've seen this in 2 transmissions and have yet to get an answer here regarding what its function is.

FWIW, I just repaired the spring, i.e. straightened out one of the coils and hooked it to the lever it is intended to attach to, with no apparent ill effects.

722 993 001 00.

$8.75.

This spring "pulls back" on the kickdown cable...without it, the transmission will not return the cable properly and the kickdown plunger could get stuck in the kickdown direction.

I install a new one in every transmission I rebuild.

I have six (6) in stock, if you can't find it locally.

They never seem to hurt anything, when they break....just fall into the pan.

John,
While you're in there, replace this spring (MB part # 126 277 09 32) It is super easy to replace and has cured my transmission flaring on my GTS and also my '89 from shifting itself out of gear.

Here is a link to an original thread about this:https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...rt-number.html

Basically the spring becomes weak with age and the replacement spring is about 2" longer than the one you will be removing. All of this is found at the driver's side front of the transmission behind a flat plate held on with 4 phillip-head bolts. Take 3 out and loosen the last. Swing the plate up and out of the way and the green piston will become visible. Gently pull the piston out and the spring assembly will come out with it. Replace the spring assembly and reinstall. When you press the piton and spring assembly back into the cavity, you will be appreciative that you left the plate attached by one screw as you can slide the plate back to hold the piston/spring assembly inside while you install the other screws.

BTW, the part is less than $15 from any Mercedes dealer.

Just a quick thanks to Greg and the original poster of this thread. I read this just before I was having the transmission fluid changed and installing the K1 shift kit upgrade. I called Greg and ordered the spring. Today, I got a call from the shop that was doing the work and they said that this little spring almost fell out as soon as the trans was opened up. So, thank you for a timely post!

Looking forward to seeing if the K1 kit helps my trans.

Glad to help..I got mine installed yesterday....
Hence, a new question..
On the K1 tube, there are 2 "O" rings..more like fiber or phenolic rings..they have diagonal splits.are these manufactured for ease of installation, or are these broken and the rings just hardened over time..

ready to close..

thnx

Default Bad Oring?

Firemn131

I too noticed the diagonal split on my K1 tube and don't know if it is suppose to be that way. Is it a broken oring?
