Injector Clean
Short of removing the injectors and having them cleaned, is there a recommended in situ injector cleaner that actually delivers positive results e.g. Techron?. I am unaware of the history of any prior injectors cleans so will assume none. Car has 190,000kms and I only use BP Ultimate 98 octane fuel ( Australia) which is marketed as having engine and injector cleaning additives (??).

I've run Berryman's B12 Chemtool through my cars in the past. Probably more effective than Techron.

There are a couple long threads on cleaning injectors. Options are loosely best, good, likely harmless;
Remove and send them out for chemical or ultrasonic cleaning, flow matching, and replacement of the various parts like filter screens and orings.
Hook up a system, either a small pressurized tank, or a big pump driven thing, that bypasses your fuel system to run some "magic" cleaning mixture through the injectors with the engine running.
Pour a can of X in the tank and hope for the best.
Old thread.

Think I will give the BG products BK44 product a try in the fuel tank first. Whilst I am unaware of any issues regarding injectors, performance or economy in my car, I am simply considering current age, past service history and thinking about some simple preventative measures. Whilst I agree that it may be worth removing all injectors for an ultrasonic clean, flow test and any repairs/checks, I think I will start off with the simple stuff first.

HI, think I will go the simpler route first. So will purchase some BK44 and see what difference (if any) makes to overall engien responsiveness and performance. Will let you know how it goes after the application.

I have been a religious user of top-tier fuels with lots of detergent additives. Supplemented that with a couple bottles of Techron in the tank each year. Car seemed to run fine. Replaced the injectors with new at about 100k miles, and it was a very impressive improvement. Most impressive was smoother idle, and a significant reduction in NOx at the tailpipe. So try the bottle of cleaner, it won't hurt anything but your wallet. Then pull the injectors and have them cleaned or replace them with new.

The BG products have very good reputations; they are one of the few companies that actually sell stuff that works. they have power steering conditioners, several kinds of fuel injector cleaners, from in-tank to a set up that you directly service the under the hood, etc.
The products are made in the USA in Witchita, KS and the Porsche agency in Kansas City sells BG as the cleaner you buy for your porsche when you ask for fuel injector cleaner. I have used it in an early '86 928 and saw improvement; this was a car that had been parked for most of last 5 years and the fuel in the lines had varnished a lot of stuff in the system that needed to work the varnish off before it would really work correctly again.
Every time I buy a can at the agency they comment that it is good stuff and they use in their cars. It isn't cheap (over $30 a can from the agency), and it isn't available at Kmart, you have to go to some kind of parts supplier, but it does work and it won't harm the fuel system AND you are buying a locally (100% invented, tested and manufactured in U.S.A.) made product from a pretty respected company in that space..check their website..they have got some pretty cool solutions that one could do for maintenance or to try to postpone more expensive repairs...etc.
And no I don't work for them, own the company, etc., I'm truly a user of their products. I've used them in 996 and the 928 with positive results.

BTW, is it more cost effective to buy new injectors versus pull and clean/repair?? Clearly new injectors would seem to be the quickest and easy solution and you have a new baseline from which to begin.

I hear the blue Ford injectors being used as alternatives are cheaper and effective compared to the stock injectors (which price at over $150 new a piece or $50 used at 928intl...a piece). I think you can get a whole set of Fords for under $300. However, if 928intl still has your year's injectors in stock, used, you can wait for their 1/2 off used sale and get a whole new used set for about $200.
928 MotorSports has a set of new injectors for $400.
WitchHunter will clean your injectors, flow rate them and all that for $21 an injector plus shipping. And from reviews, having them professionally cleaned and rated bring them back to "like new" condition. I called 928intl a while back and asked them the same thing, and they told me it was good enough to just clean them if they are still running well.
Overall, I would say it's cheaper and just as good to have them professionally cleaned up. I plan to do that to mine for my '86 928S. I ran BG 44K and had the injector seals replaced so they run fine, but it doesn't hurt to have them all polished up and flow rated especially since I'm planning on running Porken chips down the line.

I will havew to check on injector refurbs in Oz. Typically most things in this country have become expensive over the past 10-15 years. It may still be worthwhile acquiring a new set from 928Intl or even Roger.

Yea, you can't go wrong with buying a "new" set of used injectors from 928intl or new ones from Roger. For the former, they probably clean and flow the used injectors so it's like you're buying new injectors. I'd wait for the 1/2 off used sale and get all 8 for $200 + shipping if you want new ones, then run BG 44k in the meantime. Replace the rings and seals as well if they're original. You can get a kit that furnishes one injector cheap from any of the big three. Just buy 8 of them.
Here's some links to the seal kits for your year:
