A bit of a long story, but as I was approaching retirement age, I told my wife there were ~10 cars I'd like to own and drive for a year or so each before I became too old to enjoy them. She said 'go for it' or something like that (then she added - 'just as long as it doesn't end in an i ' ). There was really only one Porsche on the list - reason in next paragraph.

Saw an '83 928 S advertised for sale locally, and remembered that Hans Mezger (credited as the primary designer of 911, 917, 928 and 944 engines, and head of Porsche Weissach Advanced Engine Development at the time) had told me during a lunch discussion one day in 1987 that the 928 was one of the two best USED Porsches to buy (I'd told him I never buy new cars). So I went and looked/drove that one. Didn't buy it, but bought another local '87 S4 about 4 months later (1998), planning the ~1 year ownership. After driving it a year, I decided I wanted a different S4, so sold it and bought an '88. After another year, I tore up the list, as there were NO OTHER cars on the list that would be as enjoyable to drive as the 928.

Took up DE driving in 2000, and after two subsequent '88's (since gone), bought an '89 manual in AR for the to, from, and on track car. Thought I was set, but then on New Years eve of 2005, I came across a one owner '94 GTS with appealing options and 59K miles on it in Houston. Within 3 days, I had made a commitment to purchase. For 6+ years I've owned both, and they continue to provide many enjoyable hours - but in different ways!! NO REGRETS.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Gary--

PS: The TOTALLY UNEXPECTED bonus has been the "people" I've met and gotten to know - both personally and only via the internet with this specific car hobby. The 928 community is fabulous - both as people and for help whenever needed. The Porsche owners who participate in track events are of a similar cut - there it's just you and the car - NOT the model number on the registration slip. My sincere THANKS to all of you for helping making this an even greater experience in automobile ownership than just the car itself.

now i can afford it no matter what the economy is plus really not that expansive to keep!
also the looks, i got thumbs up twice in a day driving from some older guy walking the dog to couple younger guys in a BMW, you just got to have it!!

Sometimes I wonder who owns who LOL.

I really dig the car's looks, and owning one (or six) is a special kind of priveledge, that few will ever get to experience......

I own one, because its a life style, or maybe a cult.....and I haven't met any 928'ers that aren't at least a little nuts, I.E. really into their cars. The ones that aren't, don't own one very long.

These came out when I was about 10 years old and I fell for the looks HARD. The rear looks like some kind escape pod from an HR Geiger painting and the front just screamed "I'm fast!!". So always pined for one. Fast forward (ugh) thirty odd years and I can actually afford one. Mine isn't even in great shape, but I love it. I get a big smile just looking at it in my garage and the thrum of the big *** V8 is just freakin MAGIC.

Great Curves . . . . Long Legs . . . . . "that" rear end . . . . best headlamps ever. . . . telepathic handling. . .

I drew a lot of cars when i was a kid. i drew 928's before I ever saw one. It's like a time machine to finally own one. I have to work on mine a lot but I enjoy it more having done it and learning about them. It's finally my DD and i get to smile everyday. I just enjoy looking at it. I think I'll always have one, hope to own one in better shape someday!

My story too.
As a teenager in the 80's I was very affected by the car magazines and I loved the look of the 928 (over the 911s). Dreamcar aside from a Countach.

In the mid-90s I saw a used 928 at a car lot and was astounded by the price in the window. Was just getting married and I decided that it was silly for us to have two four door sedans, and thankfully, my significant other rightly saw things the same way! I really like the unique, distinctive look and the rarity of the 928.

I owned it for 5 years.... couldn't think of another car I would rather have that wouldn't cost an absurd amount of additional money.

10 years....couldn't think of another car I would rather have that wouldn't cost an absurd amount of additional money.

15 years.....still having problems thinking of another car I would rather have that wouldn't cost an absurd amount of additional money

17 years..... Ok, yeah, I would really prefer and enjoy a new car. But my young teenage son wants to drive this car someday....

Future = Stuck with a 928. Well, it could be much worse. What a great car to be stuck with.

Wanted a V8 in a chassis with great handling, seat 4 in a pinch, have storage space, timeless styling, killer exhaust note, and that I could drive anywhere - only the 928 does all these things at such a high level.

Bill, that movie clip is funny, I can hear the on-set discussion.

Director: Ok, we'll start the take by zooming in on the lead character in the middle of all of those Porsches.
Producer: Wait, where are the Porsches?
Director: What are you talking about, there's six of them right there in the shot. Let's start next to the white one.
Producer: What? Those don't look like Porsches, no one's going to know what kind of cars these are.
Director: Okay. Somebody put "Porsche" in big script across the hood of the one in front, then there won't be any mistake that he's dreaming about a Porsche. Take One. Rolling.

I was in the middle of a divorce and felt the need for more punishment. The car was sitting in a friends storage unit. He moved to Belize to raise oranges.(yeah right) So I asked about that ugly POS he had and next thing I knew, I owned it cheap.
It just started to grow on me, was cheaper than another wife, and now I am so deep in the bastard, their gunna have to bury me in it. Thats my story and I`m sticken too it....

928s have been in my family since 1985; I am just continuing the tradition.

I don't have a specific tie from childhood with the 928. I did have an old 928 matchbox that was one of those "smooth" and "gliding" matchbox's that we all loved. ---but that wasn't a draw either.

I've never sat in another car that makes me feel as comfortable and relaxed. Feels perfect.

When I first got into the 928, Pensacola, FL, I was stopped at a light with window down. Car with three 'boys' pull up beside me and I hear, "those cars are ugly." ........they were driving a Sentra.

The car(s) get a lot of looks and I appreciate the fact most people don't have a clue what it is.

After thirty years since introduction of the 928 and thirty years of admiration for the design and quality I so much wanted one that I became blinded by a low mileage car that had the pasha interior and drove extremely well. Not long thereafter the car developed a headgasket leak because the temp switch in the radiator didn't function when it was most needed - on a hot summer's day in a traffic jam. a long list of to do's was the reult after discovering numerous faulty repairs by the PO, including reversed mounted vibration damper (with timing marks on it) which in turn led to completely wrong timing of the distribution belt. Still immensely impressed by the sheer ride/handling/perormance quality of this car.

I figured having such good looks and styling, and so much agility and power, might as well get a car to match
