Always loved the looks.
Quoted from Top Gears Jeremy Clarkson:
This is a "he" man car, its a brute, its the kind of thing that would go out and ... and eat some tractor... for fun. I Wish Porsche still made it today..... instead of that silly Cayenne

My dream car was the 308 until I learned more about them. I was looking for an 8-cylinder rear engine car and even looked at Fiero conversions (brrr...). The 928 was always my favorite Porsche. Found my car on Craigslist and when I found out I could get a 928 in good shape for what an 8-cyl Fiero goes for I jumped on it.
Didn't even know about the family here. Jeez, I'm a lucky bastard.

Well, maybe a bit more than that.
I never knew the 928 existed until I entered my mid-life crisis and almost like Bruce Dern's character in Middle Age Crazy, I decided I wanted a sport car....
I never saw the movie until much later, but when my wife said whatever I bought had to have 4 seats so I could haul the kids around, I quickly discovered that options were limited and soon discovered the 928. It didn't take me long after reading the basic specs to see this was one helluva car, and it had 4 seats! I looked around for 6 months until I found a good one, and it was VERY good. I still own it. I had never even seen one before the day I picked up my 89 from a guy in Bend, Oregon (bought via eBay), and I totally fell in love at 120+ on a lonely stretch of I-5 on 500 mile ride home. The car is so versatile and over all dependable despite beating the crap out of it that I've never considered selling it and probably never will unless I plow it into a tree. I like the fact that it's not a common, generic car and that it's rather muscular. Even putting around town, it's invigorating to drive it. Beats the heck out of the Dodge Caravan we had at the time. Actually, my previous personal car was a 77 Mercedes 6.9, a rather remarkable car, and the 928 beats the heck out of that.

Drove a brand new 5 speed 928S in 1982, and had a 928 on my wish list ever since.
Went to a BBQ at a friends house, and his brand new just delivered MY 1982 Guards Red 928S was parked in the drive. I drooled over it, and he asked if I'd like a drive. Of course I said yes ... and to cut a long story short, took it for a drive flat out for an hour and a half on my own on windy mountain roads, at his insistence ... needless to say I was hooked from that moment.

It's either own a 928 or watch free **** on the internet. Lucky for me I'm good with time management!
Seriously though, it's been the car that I always wanted in high school back it the early 80's...Timeless design
'89 S4 GP White/Black
'76 912E Silver/Black

I was bored and in-between girl friends; needed something to do besides motorcycles. Now there are so many chicks and I have many things to drive and ride. My cup runneth over.
Actual purchase answer with underlying reasons above - My friend bought one and there were 2 for sale, so I bought the other one. What the hell.

In all honesty, the love affair started in 1979 in my dads shop. My first love was a 1978 911 Porsche Targa SC. That thing was just enough to give a kid of 9 years old a boner.
Then the 928 showed up at the house one evening. Having a father who had his own shop, and had access to everything European. I'd been taken to school in everything from a Lamborghini Miura to an XKE and was hated by a good majority of the rednecks in the school. Anyhoo. The 928 showeds up one evening and to me, it was the next best thing to a double fudge brownie. I'm almost 10 so that was big business to me.
After that, the 928s were frequent visitors to the shop, eventually I learned to drive a stick in a yellow '85, and to this day I want a yellow 928. I remember doing a head job on a 79 in about '84, fixing other stuff up until about '89 when I stopped working for my dad. It was in 1987 that my love affair came to to be, seeing the S4 was like seeing sex on wheels. That same feeling kept cropping up for two decades until I got my '88.
I still get excited looking at my car now, it just irritates me that I can't spend the time on it that I know it needs.

Always revered the Porsche when I was young - don't know why.
I was disappointed when I got to talk to a guy with a 911 Turbo Carrera - I thought the interior compartment was not much. I was 12 so I was expecting more.
The first time I saw a 928 up close I was impressed with the exterior, but even more so with the driver's compartment.
I still am.

928s offer a unique combination of performance, looks, $/HP, and relative rareness. Fantastic lines and much more comfortable interior dimensions for taller drivers than most sports cars or even GTs. You have to really want to own a 928 to stick with it, so it says something about the owner, at least those who actually maintain them.
