Default Daily Race

Been DD lately and seems either red / porsche / unusal whatever is a magnet.

Did 120miles today great drive some m/way some a+b roads.

On all roads someone wanted to race me.

Someone overtook three cars to get behind me and then sat there 3 foot from my bumper when he had plenty of chances to overtake me. We stopped at some lights and explained my thoughts but he didn't want to discuss them. He did find being in the outside lane can make you look stupid when the car inside is quicker.

Yesterday someone tried to take a 180 degree off ramp at the same speed as me, i wasn't speeding as the limit is 70mph but was feeling the tyres limits and admiring the way the car holds a line, which wasn't a good idea for him as he understeered into a huge moment of brakes and half spinning tyre smoke.

On the same journey someone was trying desperately to show me how fast their bmw 3 series is by trying to catch me. I knew he was fixated on following me so I went all the way around a roundabout whilst increasing the speed and then turned off. The look of confusion and concern on his face in the mirror was quite endearing. I think at that point he realised he was going too fast and the wrong way, he also realised he may be racing someone who was "lost".

I do however love the guy in the gallardo who pulled up at the lights and waved while he rev the nuts off it. yes your car was nicer and faster. The guy in the aston dbs who followed me down a slip road accelerating flat out past me that moved and sounded great it actually made the 928 shudder and yes i was flat out, the guy in the evo 400 who wanted to race from the lights, yes you'd win that i know how fast my car is and yours should be, i don't make myself look that stupid. I ll even extend my respects to the guy in the GT2 who refused to make any form of eye contact or even glance my way in any way whilst he waited for a chance to overtake me on the m way and show me his raw power and then quickly brake because thats just childish and i'm not worthy.

Anyway think my point was; its never boring driving a red 25yr old car and why do people who don't have sports cars or any type of car thats fast think because their behind one theirs has grown new abilities.

I've also noticed my trakings out, i need to check my gearbox for a feint whining which i can't find and the passenger window which i'd got working now doesn't again.

The GT2 guy wouldn't look but the lambo driver would - the difference between a snob and an enthusiast.

I had similar experiences driving mine in the NY/NJ area. Guys in BMWs and Audis aggressively pulling up to my side every 5 minutes...and it's miserable enough just driving in NYC metro area. But, I had it transported to North Carolina and just returned from putting 700 miles on it over a few days...not a single time did anyone try to instigate a race!

Funny, when I drive my red 928, noone tries to street race me. I guess it's all about your attitude

P.S. Where in the world do you drive to see so many exotic cars in one day. Here in NYC, I'd be amazed to see even one of the above mentioned cars on the street (it happens, but not too often). The only times I get to see so many exotics in one day is either when taking my car to a mechanic or attending some car gathering.

Mr Tim Murphy has an answer to that issue which provides "fast, fast relief".

I'm driving around and just outside london at the mo. it is a car spotters paradise
All in all for car spotting fun i'd see at least 10+ supercars on a wet tuesday and on a nice sunny day 25+
Last summer couldn't believe my eyes i'll dig out some pics of a couple of car parks you'll get the gist.

Its sad but i'm like a 12 yr old spotting cars.

Love to see nice cars and hear a nice engine instead of just another dull box it makes me smile. Driving one makes me smile more.

People are more likely to want to take on my stock looking, white, '86.5 auto. I had fun with a (newer) Challenger R/T in it, the other week. He rolled up behind me at a light, about a 1/4 mile before a nice tight turn combination that I drive through all the time (and practice my lines).

Both he and I knew he was going to be faster in a straight line, so I got up to speed nonchalantly, almost annoyingly. Fast, but not too fast, just enough for the perfect (8/10s) entry speed into the first set of corners, which I went through w/o braking, then full throttle to the next set. As I turned off at the next street to where I was going, he roared past a few seconds later. I imagine him thinking "WTF just happened?".

I was proud of the old girl.

FWIW, no one messes with the black track car, for some reason...

No exotics where I am.
A few Nascar wannabees.
But one funny scenario.
There's a young kid in town with a 'tricked out' non distinct little Mazda. It's an iridescent purple with neon light all over, and yes, a large whale tail. His 'exhaust system' makes his lawnmower tinny and loud - no bass if you know what I mean. He always plays ugly music too loud.
Anyway he pulls on my right at a light and revs up.
Says "you wanna race" ?
I say "you got Nitro" ?
Says "No".
I say "It wouldn't be a race".
I left him alone and didn't rattle his pride.

I was venturing up a back road that has a lot of very tight corners, some of them marked 10 or 15mph. I drive it often just for the "fun" of the drive. A dingbat in a silver SUV was talking on her cell phone and positioned herself about 10 feet off my back bumper. Not what I like to see....great way to get hit IME. So I took the speed up a bit. She stayed 10 feet off my bumper still jabbering away on the cell phone. So, I took one of the 15 mph curves/corrner at about 60 with her still on my backside. Hmmm, no problem for a 928. Big problem for an SUV. Fortunately the berm is wiide, she went off the road into the rough and stopped in a very big cloud of dust. I later went back by the scene, the ground was soaked with transmission fluid, so I guess she bottomed it out and trashed the transmission. Wonder if she learned anything? Some how I doubt it. I felt just a little bit bad, but not for long. Stupidity has its own reward?

As to people wanting to race there is a younger person who lives someplace around here who drives an AMG Merc that is pretty darned fast...he has put on a power show for me 2 times, once iwhile I was driving my '55 Spyder, and more recently while I was in the 928. Must have a inferiorty issue he is trying to deal with....I suspect the Spyder would give him a very unplesant surprise as it does sub 4 second 0-60mph, but in traffic around here is not a great place to prove those sorts of points, and a more or less stock 4.7 auto 928 is not competition for the AMG Merc anyhow....

London is a great place for spotting cars. Never got raced in the 928s, but I guess people were scared The M5 is another story. The estate version is so rare, people must think it is a wannabe 535 diesel. Thus I always get M3s, Audi RS4s, Porsches trying it on. The E60 M5 is supercar quick from 80mph to 170mph... There is something deeply satisfying about blasting past a 911 or an Aston DB9 as if they are standing still in a family 4-door saloon...
