Default Seized up air pump

Obviously going to need to be replaced. Is it possible to take the old one out with out removing the engine? When I had my engine out, I remember it being tucked in there pretty tight. I'm more worried about the hose connections.

Oh, and can I drive the car with it off and the hoses open? Need to send in the core.

Yes it will come out with the engine in place.

Just cap the lines till you get it replaced.

Most places will accept the core afterward within a reasonable amount of time.

I'd just remove/cut the belt so I could drive it in the meantime and order up the part, then when it comes in do the swap.

I'm not sure about the S2s, but on my car it was a b!tch to replace. I did it on someone else's and it took forever to get the bolts lined up and heat shield in place, but it can be done.

Forgot to mention that you will need to do the short belt mod or you won't have a radiator fan. Search for air pump delete to see what length belt you'll need as I don't remember the specifics off hand. 20 or 21 in depending on pulley size IIRC. But a search should find the actual answer.

On my S4 I removed it by taking out the A/C compressor and pull it from below. I opened it to clear internal surface rust and lubricate. Reverse process for installing. Has worked great for the past 3 years.

This. Just did this on my '82. Didn't however re-install it. I have the one I just took off the car, that still worked. If you want it you can have it for the cost of shipping. PM me.

Granger 21 inch belt should work . You will have to remove Alt and PS belt to get it on. I believe the part # is #4L210 at Grainger

If you want to tear into the pump you may be able to replace the bearings yourself. I have had luck finding bearings for my air pump in the past. I just had mine out of my 84'. Disconnect the feed hose froom the pump and leave the output hose connected to the pump. It is a pain but the pump will come out with some careful manuvering....swearing at it helps too!

Wasn't there a vendor offering to replace the front bearing on these?

You can rebuild them. The bearings off the internet are about $20. Taking it apart is not bad - you just need to go slow. There are four small roller bearing for the shaft, one roller bearing on the back and a sealed ball bearing on the front. All pretty standard. The front bearing because of the heat I would use what was original with a metal shielded bearing.

I replaced on my 84 and it was not a lot of fun. I think it was best when I dropped the A/C pump a little to get clearance. If you need to bearing numbers let me know. I have not yet completed the smog pump page which I will be working on over the next few weeks.

Good luck

If pump internals are dead one way to fix it is to take them out and just replace bearings at both ends. Pulling out front bearing is little tricky and correct tools help. Brute force can destroy pump casting. Empty pump can be used to adjust fan belt without danger of it going bad again. Vacuum line needs to be closed. All hoses etc can remain in place for stock look.

Won't a non functioning air pump mean the cats run rich at startup, perhaps shortening cat life and/or heat issues?
