New front tires are sticking out @1/2 inch. Now what?
I just installed a brand new set of Dunlop Direzza Z1. 245/40/17 up front and 265/40/17 in rears. Same exact size I was running before, but with Kumho Exsta Supra tires that were NLA. Now I just noticed that the front tires stick outside the fender about half an inch. So slight I have been doubting myself, but I'm sure they are sticking out. What gives? My Kumho's didn't stick out. So what now? I have driven on them @30 miles so can't return them.
I've been reading here that size can vary by an inch or so between makes/models. So seems I've got a problem now. I don't think I want to run with my front tires sticking out...Even if it's a hair over.
So, IF I buy another set of front's; How do I know what size to get that won't stick out? Does going to 235/40/17 reduce the extension and by how much? Sorry, I don't know my offsets as the wheels came with the car. They are 17" Kinesis BW Motorsport 3.6 wheels.
Are there any options to solve this besides new tires? I'm not to pleased to have to buy another set of front tires now. Maybe I can sell my front's, but who knows. Kinda pissed right now. Any help would be appreciated.

The numbers dont mean much....
You have to look at the section width..thats the widest part of the tire installed on a properly sized wheel.
Go back to the tire shop and complain...you shoullda noticed in 30 miles..but...

Tire sizes are the maximum width of the bulge on the sidewall and actual tread width easily varies from 8.3 inches to about 9.8 inches for a 245x40x17 as stated on Tireracks specification depending on the tire. Many do not list the tread width so it is hard to compare.

If your tires are sticking out then your rims have the wrong offset probably 50 in your case, the stock front wheel offset is 65 and is not a good idea to go below 55 due to handling problems it may cause.
Here is a good read on wheel offsets for the 928. http://www.landsharkoz.com/forms/928wheels.pdf

What Paul said. Front offsets are crucial on a 928.
I have a set of ET52 cup wheels with 235/45/17 up front. Tha car is tramlining and rides the ruts in the road surface like crazy. Very unplesant.
With the stock S4 wheels it is a totally different car. Smooth and steady, with a nice feel to the steering.
I finally sourced a set of original '94 GTS wheels, Cup2s with ET 65.... New Bridgestone S02 N3 rubber due to arrive next week

Are they rubbing the fenders when compressed? If not, I'd not worry about it.

First response. I bought them from Tire Rack and they were installed by my mechanic and he test drove the car for the main reason it was in the shop. A bad noise that turned out to be a blown exhaust gasket. So once I got the car the tires were nonreturnable.
Second response is I did NOT have this issue with my previous tires and the rims are the rims that came with the car and bought from 928 specialists. I'm fairly sure they are proper 928 offsets.
I don't have any rubbing problem so far but have only driven 30 miles or so. Car feels absolutely. Not fantastic pushed around at all on road rutts, etc. Very happy with the tires but not happy about looking ghetto with tires sticking out.
Here's some pictures from diff angles. Please let me know what you all think and what is the best course of action. I'd buy another front set if that's what's needed. The problem is I'm not sure what size to get now.
Thanks,
David

That does not look bad at all to me... Can the front fenders be rolled at all? I've only ever rolled the rears...
Seriously Non-ghetto if you ask me... Now take a look at some of the cars running 911 offsets... Those could be considered semi-ghetto... Only full ghetto if there are angled mud flaps and curb feelers...

I resemble that remark....I do fret. Btw, the wheels are 9 inch fronts and 10 inch rears. So far no rubbing. It's so slightly out that you hardly notice. I'm starting to think it's ok. Just needed a little moral support here. As I've said here before. As far as I'm concerned my 928 is a Lamborghini Miura and worth as much (to me) in dollars and (in reality) irreplacability.
