Smile Has anyone made a replacement dash out of wood?

When I look at the alternatives for repairing the dashboard I cringe. Putting carpet over the mess that was my dash is akin to wearing a rug (no insult intended) and so I found myself considering a 1/4 inch plywood alternative.

If anyone has suggestions or words of encouragement, I'd love to hear from the friendly 928 folks out there.

I am a couple of months away from offering complete recover kits based on my "tailored approach".

Plywood would not be my first choice for a solution to this problem. Different rates of expansion and retraction would cause a problem.

Suggestion: Pull the old dash, mail it to Rob Budd, have him recover it, (check all your vacuum pods and gauge cluster lighting, reseal the blower box while dash is out), reinstall. $700-ish, last time I checked.

There are safety considerations if you make a dash out of such a solid material ?

I have thought about this. I think you would do it by bending and laminating layers of veneer onto the stock sheet metal dash skeleton. You would probably not want to go super thick..no more than 1/4 inch or so and I think that would not be more ridgid than the stock steel under layer. It would be lovely with a mapel or a koa top layer. Not sure if you would do a spar varnish or a urethane, or a polyester over the top, and if you would want to do a layer of glass. Obviously you would not want to be leaving it sitting in the full hot sun too much, but then that is true for leather also. Personally I would love to have koa dash, armrest and console with cork leather seats.

If plywood is an 'upgrade' for your car, you gotta post some interior pics.

Are you trying to say the billet aluminum dash I'm having made is a bad idea?

I've seen a few where plywood would be an improvement.

I don't see how you would get past the glare with wood, something else would need to be used on the top.

Can't say that I care for the look a car has once people start piling on the wood trim, seems old fashioned.

It'd match the CE cover

Wood dash looks great in big old cars--like the Silver Cloud below, but I just can't imagine it in a 928 without significant effort to tie it in with the center console, glove box, pod, side door inserts, etc.

I'll post some pics of the dash as it is. The Canadian winters probably don't do the leather any favours and we've no shortage of UV rays these days either.

Love the idea of adding veneer to the original dash skeleton.

As for plywood being an upgrade, I think Red Green would be proud. :-D

Thanks everyone!

Wood? No. Now stone - that's what the Cro-Magnons went with. Check with them on the pre-historic board.
