Most advanced car of each decade
I missed the link but Yahoo had a list of the most advanced cars of each decade. The 959 was named the most advanced for the 80's. I am not sure if I consider the 959 a production car. Here is the question. Does the 928 really deserve that title. I know its not 4 wheel drive but look at everthing else it set the standard for.

Yea, in the '70's I think the 928 *might* have it, but what about that Renault that had an elastomeric suspension and lights that tracked with the steering? Maybe that was a Citroen, not a Renault. That would rank as a VERY, VERY sophisticated car! Not sure if it was introduced in the '60's or '70's...

For the 70's, I rank the Mustang II right there with the best of them. *joking*
The 928 would have to be top on that list, considering the de-tuned poop that was available.

I'm going to a Goodings Auction at the Amelia Island Concourse on Friday. One of the cars being sold is this silver '88 959 from Oregon with only 5,300 miles & its US road legal. They estimate it will sell between $400-$500k. This one had "Canepa Design Phase II Upgrade", which increased it from 450hp to 640hp.
IIRC, the 234+- 959s Porsche sold to the public at just under the mid $200s. Yet it cost them almost double that amount to produce them, even way back in the mid 80's. All in an effort by Porsche to meet the requirements to race in Groupe B as a production car. Then they changed the requirements for Groupe B & instead the 959 was off to impress the world from Paris to Dakar!
The 959 is one of the top iconic Porsches ever produced & had technology way ahead of its time. They had Kevlar, twin turbos, all wheel drive, adjustable road height from inside the car, etc. It held the title of the "quickest" production car for over 10 yrs & top speed around 205.
I think this will be only the third 959 I've ever seen in person. I saw a dark blue one at the Amelia Island Concourse in '04. It was from So. Fla & when I spoke to the owner, he said with a smile that he could personally vouch for the claim of 200+- mph! Brumos has a silver one with a Pascha interior that I've seen multiple times. I thought I had some interior pics from when they had it on the showroom floor a couple years ago, but can't find those.
So to me, I think a $500k 959 is a bargain considering the above factors. If I was independently wealthy, I'd certainly be bidding on this one to bring it home.

And you have to give the 959 some extra credit for being so versatile. Not many supercars back in the '80s or now could lay claim to going 4Wheelin!
Much less for a 15,000 km race & coming in 1st, 2nd & 6th! I believe I read that the 959 that finished in 6th place in the 1986 Paris to Dakar race was actually their support vehicle, only the 1st & 2nd place 959s were meant to be in the competition! Really speaks to the reliability that Porsche built into the 959.

I think the State Lotto isn't until Saturday & I'd have to at least buy a ticket!!
I plan to go before the auction during the preview & see the cars, take some pics & hopefully just watch the auction quietly in the back!
The Sunoco 917-30 from the Matt Drendel collection is being sold too. Supposed to go in the $3-$4 million range!
