Engine, valve clatter 928 1989 S4 noise help needed
I have read a few threads on this, but valve or valves must be one of the most used thread title items out there. If I missed something good for my issue... thread identification would be great
My problem is I have noticed some clatter in what I believe are the valves on my 89 S4 (the blue one) over the last months. It seems like it will changes sound levels from day to day, but I am not sure. Today seemed louder than any other to date.
I did get 3 quarts low on Oil about 6-8 weeks ago, but my oil pressure never dropped at any time. Solid all the way through as always. It also did not have the valve clatter. I noticed that the engine was warmer to the touch than I expected.
I have also noticed vibration through the car that I have not been able to identify yet. I have the leading thought it is a bent rim, but today playing with the vibration while driving, it may be coming through the motor. I did replace the motor mounts with the Ford ones 8 months ago, so I am going to check on those tonight. Might have to put the Volvo ones in if the collapsed. I have a fresh set of rims and I am waiting on tires to see if that eliminates the vibration. Vibration has been there for quite a while (3 months'ish)
I do not know if there is a relationship between the valve clatter (oil was mid stick today when checked) and the vibration. I did find the below link in my search, but I think it is the older S4 issue and not the 89 if I have read everything correctly.
Help is appreciated as always folks. Thank you
E

You need to pull the cam covers off and replace the oil pressure blockoff plugs with the updated versions.
That is my first guess, if it has not been done yet, replace the chain tensioner pads while you are in there.

As a side note, I put the fresh rims and new tires on the girl and vibration is all but gone. Road vibration is the only thing left... happy days for that.
How long should I plan for to swap those parts out?
I found this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...placement.html, but I would not call anything in there instructions.
Anyone know where to get some good instructions on how to do these little jobs?... little was a joke...

it is not that hard, but be sure and get a fresh bottle of 574 and I always replace the end seals and cam seals when I do them, get the kit that has the upper and lower pads when you talk to roger he will know every thing you need, you also need 8 of the seal rings for the tensioners and the o-rings for the breather fittings.
I would also find, beg borrow the proper tools to set the cam gears up if you take them off to replace the cam seals.
As far as time, well it depends, seems some say they can do things that take me two weeks in a hour, but I plan on about 6 hours to do that job, maybe more if there is a lot of cleaning.

OK... I have not done that on my watch. Could have been done by prior owner, but I will call Roger and get the parts....
As a side note, I put the fresh rims and new tiers on the girl and vibration is all but gone. Road vibration is the only thing left... happy days for that.

Roger should have all of it.
I strongly recommend a good digital torque wrench in all three sizes, but I bet that is out of your budget, it is out of all but the pro guys budget.
You will need a big one for the crank bolt (I use a 3/4 inch one), and a small one for the banjo bolts (1/4 inch), then a 3/8 inch for the rest.
Some one will be along shortly to tell you that you do not need all of that I am sure, but you asked me and that is what I use.

The stand for the dial indicator, the proper end for it and the dial indicator itself.
Roger should have all of it.

When I did the crank bolt... I used my 3/4 drive and put a good pull on it. I did not torque it, though I could have with my 1/2 drive and probably should have. Might do that this weekend on both just to check.
Thanks again and half the fun is having tools you really don’t have to have, just enjoy having to make the job more fun.
.... and the parts will leave Rodger to me Monday... I know what I am doing next weekend
