Default Cam Chain Tensioner Pad Replacement

Almost have the cam covers off, what an experience! Once they are off, is there any way to replace the plastic guides on the cam chain tensioners?

I know I'm being naive to think there's such as thing as a reasonable WYAI on a 928, but I am unlikely to take these *(&(&#$ things off again. At least not with the engine still in the car :nono

Yep, just need to remove the tensioner assembly. As far as I am aware you can only get the pad on the adjustable section not the fixed but this is the one that matters anyway.

Last time I got new bolts and they came with some loctite or similar goop on them, just FYI, don;t want those bolts backing out.

Do a search under my name.

The 944 16V WSM decribes the procedure too (how to take the tensioners out). In case you don't have the 944 WSM on hand: http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm

The lower pads dry out and crack too. I would never put any type of wear item back into my engine. When the chain snapped on my 944S (same parts as an S4) both pads were hard and brittle.

I agree, the pad on the adjustable part of the tensioner broke on my 928 and it makes a bigger mess than the 944 ... but I could not get hold of the new fixed pad (for the other side as I bought a new tensioner on the failed side) or you could but it cost as much as new tensioner.

Maybe things have changed.

How so? Just curious.

I've seen 944S heads with huge holes in them when the tensioner ripped off. My cams were ground down to the point where only a few teeth remained. Somehow I walked away without a single bent valve.

I ended up buying a new tensioner & two brand new cams from Porsche (could not find used ones). List price was $1,000 per cam

Be careful when you pull the chain tensioner out. It's spring loaded, so you could lose the internal plunger and spring down into the engine if it comes apart unexpectedly.

Same as your experience except the engine continues to run on 4 cylinders which means you need to pull the engine to flush out the crap. If you left it running long enough you could have major damage.

So a cursory search (including Schocki's rebuild thread) doesn't pull up any part numbers for these pads. All I see in PET is the two whole tensioner assemblies, 928.108.028.08 and 928.105.027.08. If the school of thought is the whole tensioner should be replaced (right after I hit the lottery), then what else needs to be replaced as well? mounting bolts? the S-shaped oil lines? banjo bolts?

Part numbers/suppliers, people, I need names and numbers!

If you look at 103 05 in PET and go to the end after #38 you will see the following listed

928 105 509 01 Guide piece upper $16
944 105 949 00 Guide piece repair kit $110

Thanks Mark- does the repair kit have all four pads in it? If so, I'll take one. Let me know.

I just talked to my Porsche dealer and he said the kit comes with 2 guides and 4 screws. Your better off getting the guides seperately.

[soup ****] No lower chain tensioner pads for you! [/soup ****]

EDIT:

I need to learn how to search better. Back in May: Enzo states: "The 944S & 944S2 have the exact chain tensioner system as the 32 Valve 928's" in this thread:

https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...6&postcount=21

The 944 vendors have the upper and lower pads, it's just that they're $150 per side. I wonder where they're getting them and who is making them if Porsche isn't?
