Yup, first thing I found when I got my "new" car home. I had smelled gas vapors every so often on the ride home from the PO's place.

1. Replace those fuel lines NOW! When you take off that U-shaped piece you will thank all of us for this.

2. Where the heck are you getting all those avatar pics! I've combed the 'net with no luck...

Yeah, there are four rubber fuel hoses in the engine compartment of an 84, two on each side. Three of the four are at the top near the air filter, but there is one that goes down near the wheel well on the passenger side which is a little tougher to visually inspect.

LOL - Those lines were replaced looooooonnnnngggg ago (when I took the pictures). That's why the lines are DISCONNECTED in the pictures. I only posted them so the OP knew where they were located--and unfortunately, they're the only ones I had.

As for the pictures, I'm just mucking around with photoshop. Getting this woman to sit in my car was a challenge

I wonder what those 3-ways go for? Normally you pay extra for that. [/QUOTE]

Chris, make your own like I did that would last forever or as Ken suggested to me , eliminate it altogether (which I eventually did)

Default Y-Replace Instructions

Here's a PDF of an instruction article for replacement on my car (1989). I added some description and photos detaiing the extra support needed on the hoses to avoid breaking the new piece.

Like Bill Ball, this was one of the first repairs I did on the car when I bought it in 1997 with 22k on the meter. Whole repair, including shopping and photos, was a couple hours. I considered making a hardware-store piece but the factory part was cheap enough to make that impractical.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR UNTIL YOU GET THIS FIXED. I can't stress this enough. I had the same problem with the gas smell and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Checked the Y Connector, vacuum lines and started on replacing the fuel lines. Ended up with a bad engine fire. It started the same way.

Well, my Y connector was broken in several areas and one of the hoses was rotted through. I went ahead and replaced the plastic Y with a brass T and replaced the rotted hose. First test of the new setup seems good and not smelling any gas. Will drive the car and keep a close eye (nose) on things. Thanks to the experience of folks on this site I was able to quickly resolve the issue.

Nothing better than finding a problem that's been elusive... Especially a fuel leak!

I began to get a faint smell of gas in the cabin about the time this thread started so I decided to check out my Y-Connector. I wasn’t freaking out about Fuel Line leak(s) because I had replaced them this past summer but why take the chance.

Sure enough, 2 ends were cracked and not attached. I replaced the Y-Connector with a home made brass connector and ended up replacing one of the hard plastic hoses that go to the Charcoal cannister because I could not get the end of the broken Y-Connector out. I used 7/16” fuel line hose for the replacement.

After re-assembly I went for a test drive and so far so good. Too soon to declare a complete success because there were a lot of smells(me, clothes with grease and latex odor) working on the first drive but at least I can check this off the list.

First check that the cover in the hatch area is seated and sealed. Even if the area is dry, it can still allow the smell of fuel into the passenger compartment.
