Hello fellow shark lovers

I have a rather interesting problem to share. So one day i am cruising along listening to my local rock station (97.1 the river all the way), when suddenly Hudson (my 1981 porsche 928, only rowers will understand the name) stops running. Luckily i was on a hill so i was able to drift into a residential street out of harm's way. So i am pulled over..... freaking out because my baby is hurt.... And i try to start her back up and the engine starts to turn over but does not turn on. I try a couple more times (bad for my poor little start i know) And finally hudson Turns on, but she turns on only with my foot pushing the gas all the way down. When she turned on despite the pedal being on the floor hudson will not rev up, staying under 1000 rpm the whole time. Then as i take my foot away from the gas she dies. So i had to get the guy with the big mean tow truck to tow me home 30 miles..... I did some research and found that the car sometimes has Intake manifold gasket leaks, and to try spraying starter fluid on the manifold along with in the intake behind the filter etc. In doing this i believe i can cross off Fuel pump and gaskets seeing as neither works. I also tried replacing the battery and even providing a little juice from another car via jumping cables. I am at a lose here and need your guys' expert opinions on my next course of action.

Tl/DR
Car: 1981 stock 928
Problem: if starts won't rev past 1000 RPM
Tried: spraying starter fluid in intake and on spider components, Tried jumping with battery from My 86 944 turbo and dad's Suv jumping at 4000 RPM
Observations: jumping helped slightly but the car will not even turn over all the way and start to the previously stated problem

Reward: 10 internets and a Beer

pull out these relays and see if they are working, open the relays and clean the contacts smell for burning
XVI fuel injection
XVII fuel pump
check fuse 22 and replace it

I Actually replaced the fuel filter recently and i had sprayed starter fluid in the intake but it did not help

Sounds like my experience with a jumped timing belt. You can pull the top two covers and rotate it easily enough to check.

Nice name by the way - I approve, even if I have never really liked their boats.

The first single i ever rowed was a hudson midweight from 08 very scary experiance honestly.... but their unis are nice, back to the problem though, can you give me some more info on the checking procedure? what exactly am i looking for (i am not exactly as good with engines as i wish i was.)


@merlin which relays are those i looked into my fuse box and non of them are labeled i am currently looking for a diagram

All you're worried about though is rotating the engine (make sure you're out of gear . . .) to the right alignment.

Basically you'll need a 10 mm socket (1/4" drive works the best . . .) to remove the top two covers to see the cam gears. Then us a 1 1/16" socket on the crank bolt (look at the main pulleys, right in the middle of the engine) to rotate it. You're on an 81 (16 valve engine), so you'll be rotating the engine (clockwise) until the red pointer lines up with the line between "O" and "T". Then look at the cam gears to see if the notches line up with the pointers (both left and right).

I will check this in about half an hour when i have an extra set of hands, hope your are thirsty you might have earned your self a beer.

I also noticed that the belts to the very front (left and right) are a tad loose and the small belt to the rear and on the right is worn away a bit.

get a light and look carefully at the CE panel then you will see the roman letters and small arrows pointing to each relay.
check the timing belt first to make sure it has not jumped time,
though if the engine cranks over like it used to then the belt is prolly OK

Ethre Has just earned ten internets and a beer. The cam gear was about 2 inches off from the notch it was supposed to line up with.

Now if somebody could please point me in the direction of a discussion on how to adjust the cam gears i would be very happy. thanks everybody

AHHH you might be better served to get another set of eyes on the engine, someone thats done this before..
