Well its now on its way to Stefan - and it looks like it will be there in plenty of time for the start of Saturday's PacNW meeting.

Please do take lots of pictures and keep track of who's cars get fixed for the list!

Hi Alan and JP,

JP, noted that your tap is really doing the rounds.

After I read the posts today, I decided to check whether my brass plug, that I turned up about 12 years ago would come out, as it has been years since I checked it.

Came out OK and as stated in this thread, the end of the thread fitting is open to the atmosphere, so I found a negative battery terminal plastic cover and it fitted into the tapped hole nicely, so put some more anti-seize on the thread and refitted the plug, pushing the plastic cup to the end of the hole, which should seal the end of the thread.

When I made the brass plug I filed a screw driver slot in the head, so I filed it a bit deeper and make up a better extraction tool, so should be good for many more years.

If the GTS rubber plug is used I would suggest sealing the inside end of the threaded section, then apply a liberal coating of anti-seize via the towing attachment stored in the tool box and then fit the rubber plug thereby preventing any corrosion of the threads.

My rear towing fitting has never been covered but still in excellent condition.

Tails - that is a good point. I have the rubber bung (stock) but it's actually been a long time since I screwed the tow eye in. I guess I'd better try that. I'd feel a bit silly if I needed to use it and couldn't screw it in after spending a few years of shipping this thing all over the country...!

I like the FedEx delivery of a USPS Priority Mail box (the latter being free ). Always wondered if that would work. I guess it does!

Ed - yeah it works! - FedEx charged a lot more money than USPS would have... On that basis I'm pretty sure they don't really care much whose box it is...

We have been moving quickly here recently - hopefully we can keep this up...

I'd like to give special thanks to Ed Scherer for donating his almost new 21/32" drill for use with the tap.. from now on this will go along with the tap and extension.

Updated List is now: (if you are on this list I have your details no action needed to stay there).
- If you want to be added to this list please PM me your contact info: name, email, address, phone.

After I ran the tap through mine, I used a toothbrush to apply a coat of rustoleum paint to reseal the surface to fight further corrosion, then put a rubber plug in there.

Still moving fast here - we are down to the last few.. if you want to get on the list while the tool is still in the USA - contact me now.

Next steps are trip though Europe/Scandinavia and then likely the Tap will go on permanent load to the OCIC tool loan program.

My thanks to John Pitman for comissioning and loaning the tap
My thanks to Ernie Byrnes who actually made the tap
My thanks to Ed Scherer for donating a 21/32" drill
Plus my thanks to those who have set up group use sessions to maximize coverage...

Alan,

Latley I have been copying the progress of this tool to the man who actually made it, so it would be nice to add his name to the 'courtesy of ..' message - Ernie Byrnes, who can do anything with a piece of metal. Latest job he did for me was to machine a new groove inside a cast alloy model aero engine crankcase - just like a bought one!

John - Done with pleasure - see last update edited!

Ernie sounds like a great resource, we are certainly maximizing the benefit of his work...

I will also add it to the insert in the package for future trips...
