Hi Alan,
I have 2 tap extensions that are 5" each in length and also can be put together for 10 inch of reach no welding
just needs the end of the tap ground square to .290
The square opening is .292/.295area and the largest diameter part is only .560 diameter so it can go up inside the car ok.
They are at
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/2534/=hpf2ip
Instead of depending on the weld and sleeve the tap entensions with square opening might be something to try.
The tap would just need a square ground on the end.
Catalog says .286 square and .290 opening.
I checked the square end its .290 so a tap ground square of .288 to .290 would work.
It depends how big the shaft of the tap is now if it can be ground to .288/.290
I would include those extensions in the kit if you wanted to go that way.
Anyone that is looking for tap extensions of any other job they are at
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/2534/=hpf2ip
and come in a pair of 5 inches each and can be put together for longer reach.

One issue with a plug in extension is that there isn't a lot of clearance for the extension socket bell - better I think to keep it a long & slim shaft to avoid any rubbing on the front grill parts...

I know what your saying on the grill parts.
The largest part of the extension bell area is only .560 about .100 smaller in diameter
than the (.656) 21/32" drill bit used to drill out the old plug.
How big is the tap shaft?

I've had it for 2 weeks+ but haven't had time to get anything done yet. I do have a welder who will work on this next week - so we should be back in action soon. I'll try to weld it and sleeve it this time for added strength.

Sorry for being off the air on this one so long...

Normal service will resume soon...
Any news on this? Looking forward to being able to deal with this. Mine has been hosed for many years, so a few more months won't matter .

Well, timely message Ed - just got it back from the fabrication shop - lots of travel recently and one failed attept at a repair made this just drag on.. Anyway its back - the repair looks better this time - I think the issue originally and then also with the repair last time was due to the very big difference in the materials - the tap end is super hardened steel while the shaft end is very mild. Pinning it (original method) was insufficiently strong.

It now has a channel ground around it it and its TIG welded around the whole circumference...

Neat - I got to watch the whole thing - a new guy with a great little shop - does everything!

Donald - it will be back out to you tomorrow.

Well - at least its been getting used... I added a soft heat shrink wrapper over the center of the shaft since thats where it might contact the paint and it was a little rougher than before there at the weld. The hardened steel tool end is really tough.

I expect it will be good now - its always a learning experience.

It occurs to me that the OCIC in Wichita would make one hell of a "group use session" opportunity.

Any chance we could schedule things that way?

I suggested it to Roger & Marc a while ago - they seemed interested - but we really need a "host" for it who can also take along a drill & bit, dremmel & carbide tip burr for owners to use at their own risk (better still if they are prepped in advance. Roger & Marc will be super busy so we need somone else...)

Ed could that be you? I'd be happy to rearrange the group schedule a little for this - since the goal is really to get as many uses as possible and help out as many owners as possible... if roger could bring along a supply of the GTS pacifier/dummy bungs that would be great as well sure to shift some.

jp has also agreed to ultimately place the tap on permanent loan to the 928 OC as an owner-loaner tool (just for nominal charge to cover shipping etc - as now) - will do this just as soon as we have completed all these currently planned rounds.

I could probably do it, although Marc (I assume you're talking Marc White) might be better since he's local.

I think I've got all the rest of the stuff needed.

BTW, are you going to be there?

I could "co-host" at OCIC if needed. Have cordless dremel and drill and lots of bits.

Then take possession to help a few others in Indy and then pass it on.

Just a thought

Kurt & Ed - if you two are willing to do this jointly - I'm happy to make it happen...

Slight swap of ordering...
