Towing eye thread cleaning tap useful ?
I have had a tap made (some time ago) that can clean up the towing eye threads for the 20mm OD model. AFAIK the smaller early model hasnt had any issues reported, but I have drilled and cleaned several cars here in Melbourne, Oz. Note that if the alloy plug is corroded in place, you will need a LONG drill bit near 5/8" dia.
Is there any demand (other than one approach I have had directly) for access to such a tap in USA?
The thread is known as "Knuckle", apparently used in firefighting, plumbing etc. See this page:-

Its actually all imperial dimensions, despite being known to us as 15mm or 20mm OD versions.
If there is some interest, I will organize to ship it to somebody to lend out, until it can be copied locally (preferred option long term).

Interesting post- crying need for soemthing like this. If those plugs are not removed/greased regularly they just oxidise in situ and nothing is going to shift them. why oh why they did not simply put a plastic plug in the front one I do not know- better to have something that is a bit oxidised and gunged up than something you can do nothing with except drill out.
My plug is currently stuck solid- theonly option I can see is to drill it out and then clean up the threads.

That makes 2 interested parties, one in the wrong part of the world!
Start looking into how you will drill most of the plug out, and you will find out whats involved. I belive that porsche did later supply a rubber plug (like a large child's dummy (comforter to you lot)) in place of the stupid alloy item.

Yep, 928 722 107 01. About $3. Interestingly the rubber GTS part has the same part # as the alloy S4/GT part. My 90 has the alloy piece.

FYI, it's a "pacifier" or "binky" to many of us who speak Yank English. Don't know about the Limeys, Irish, Kiwis or Canucks. "... Divided by a common language," you know.
A "comforter" is a light, puffy, top cover for a bed, often filled with goose down or feathers.

Well, I have found someone who can supply this unusual tap.
Porsche tax included, of course.
M 20 X 8 PITCH R.H. KNUCKLE THREAD TAP PLUG CHAMFER BRIGHT FINISH
1 PIECE = 175.00
2 PIECES = 135.00 EACH
LEAD TIME IS 5-7 WORKING DAYS
Now that's a hefty price for a single use tool! I suppose if someone were interested in jumping in on the opportunity, I might go for the 'lower priced, high volume option'.
Ideally, these rarely used tools would be made available for a fee to interested parties (RL members, 928 OC members, customers of parts suppliers). I think this model already exists with the water pump repair tooling and even a shark tuner.

Its just inside the RHS grille opening, IIRC pointing slightly downwards. On the early cars you needed to remove the RHS bumper cover plug (which probably protected the thread from road debris, as they didnt come with a plug). Somebody will pos ta pic no doubt. There seems to be some interest, so I will start the process to ship it to Alan, as I have his details already, somewhere. Checking that you can screw your towing eye into the receiver BEFORE you need to use it might be a good idea. I cleaned up one plugged thread here a few years ago, only a week or two before it was used in anger.
