I have had a tap made (some time ago) that can clean up the towing eye threads for the 20mm OD model. AFAIK the smaller early model hasnt had any issues reported, but I have drilled and cleaned several cars here in Melbourne, Oz. Note that if the alloy plug is corroded in place, you will need a LONG drill bit near 5/8" dia.

Is there any demand (other than one approach I have had directly) for access to such a tap in USA?

Its actually all imperial dimensions, despite being known to us as 15mm or 20mm OD versions.
If there is some interest, I will organize to ship it to somebody to lend out, until it can be copied locally (preferred option long term).

Interesting post- crying need for soemthing like this. If those plugs are not removed/greased regularly they just oxidise in situ and nothing is going to shift them. why oh why they did not simply put a plastic plug in the front one I do not know- better to have something that is a bit oxidised and gunged up than something you can do nothing with except drill out.

My plug is currently stuck solid- theonly option I can see is to drill it out and then clean up the threads.

 

That makes 2 interested parties, one in the wrong part of the world!
Start looking into how you will drill most of the plug out, and you will find out whats involved. I belive that porsche did later supply a rubber plug (like a large child's dummy (comforter to you lot)) in place of the stupid alloy item.

Yep, 928 722 107 01. About $3. Interestingly the rubber GTS part has the same part # as the alloy S4/GT part. My 90 has the alloy piece.

 

Sounds like the description is Knuckle thread din 405 Rd 20 x 1/8", says used in fire fighting equipment that may be exposed to the elements.

 

Exactly, but the 20mm is approximate - its really 0.8"......stupid to quote mm, when its all imperial.

Is this the front or rear one? Any pictures? On my 91GT I have a plug for the rear, but on my 90S4 it is missing. Is the part number listed above what I am missing on the S4?

Now that's a hefty price for a single use tool! I suppose if someone were interested in jumping in on the opportunity, I might go for the 'lower priced, high volume option'.

Ideally, these rarely used tools would be made available for a fee to interested parties (RL members, 928 OC members, customers of parts suppliers). I think this model already exists with the water pump repair tooling and even a shark tuner.

Where is the plug in the front? I see the one in the back, mine is missing but where in the front for a tow hook? Thought those were under the front, one on each side.

 

Its just inside the RHS grille opening, IIRC pointing slightly downwards. On the early cars you needed to remove the RHS bumper cover plug (which probably protected the thread from road debris, as they didnt come with a plug). Somebody will pos ta pic no doubt. There seems to be some interest, so I will start the process to ship it to Alan, as I have his details already, somewhere. Checking that you can screw your towing eye into the receiver BEFORE you need to use it might be a good idea. I cleaned up one plugged thread here a few years ago, only a week or two before it was used in anger.

Just about to clean mine out using the chaser/tap that JP has kindly sent me.

 

I was interested until I saw that damn price.....Wow. I'd pay $30 or so, but not $75.
