Really nice 928 numbers
These really nice low mileage cars showing up lately have me wondering about the 928 population. Guessing there are about;
100 really nice, showroom condition 928's.
1,000 nice, clean good running regularly driven 928's.
2,000 ten to twenty foot drivers with some issues.
10,000 projects.
Could be we are close to the point where the easiest way to get a really nice 928 is going to be restoration, not finding a "fine" example for sale.

Encouraging that even the basket cases like this one ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...08664214601794 ) are fetching over $2K.

At least...there were 56k-ish 928's built from '78-'95... Most of them are owned by either me, Roger, or 928 International! LOL! Oh and Ed has 10 of them himself!

Its a 928... even the 100 have "issues".... Fortunately, thier issues are not enough miles being put on 'em
Mine is one of the 1000 - 2000 examples and I drive the HELL out of it... and, my car LOVES it

61k made originally. Only few true concours cars left which can be called 100% original. Still total rebuild is so expensive that its cheaper to pay $50k+ to get perfect one. Once top quality cars get above $100k it starts to make financial sense to rebuild matching number engine and gearbox normal condition cars.

26k sold int he US, 2k more imported, maybe 14k still "around", how do the ROW numbers compare?
One of my assumptions is that if you want to really drive a 928, even with low miles its still going to need a major going through in the next 10k or so miles. I would plan to pull the motor and do the heads and reseal on just about anything where it hasn't been done before reliably.

You think nearly HALF have been destroyed??? Man, I think that is WAY HIGH! I'd guess not more than 15% are completely out of commission. Probably another 5%+ that are worth more parted out, but still that leaves what nearly 20k US 928's still... That is a LOT of cars compared to other European "collector" cars.

Well if those are right then I think mine fits in the 1 of 1000 or 1 of 2000 depending on the day and prevailing issue :-)
How many of those 928s are represented here on Rennlist?
Merry Christmas everyone.

Haha, NoVector that eBay listing was hilarious to see. That guy clearly didn't understand that 928's are different from your standard Chev 350 Camaro. I've learned very quickly/come to accept that i will most likely end up spending about $5000 before mine is in a state that i feel comfortable with.
Anyways, what is the price for 928's doing these days? I paid $10000 for my 87 S4 5 speed this past May. My opinion on 928 value is that they'll get some kind of mention in today's pop culture/shows and that's what will push the value up on these cars. Who knew there would be an albeit small cult following for restoring those ugly looking AMC Gremlins (or any of the first "domestic imports") back to original? Not that i'm comparing the 928's status to a Gremlin, but i'm just saying that the 928 is a similar story.
I personally could care less about the 928's value because i'm not flipping cars to make a living, or frustrated with the fact that it's a high maintenance car in any condition. Heck at this point in time, people thinking they can buy an old 79, give it a light tuneup and polish, and sell it for twice what they paid for it should steer clear of 928's.
