I personally prefer aluminium welding.
Though you really need to start with tons of heat and then back off the heat the longer you work as the entire piece heats up.

Stainless I am OK at, the thin stuff drives me mad though, I cannot seem to find the balance. It is either too hot and burning, or not even melting.
But it still looks ok, and holds great!

Greg,

My hat is off to you. Sounds like an ambitious goal but as they say, 'Practice makes perfect.'

I'm planning to start learning to weld after the holidays. It's something I think I'd really enjoy and one of those skills I've always wanted to learn.

I have an idea for a modified hood but it's going to be a LOOONG time before I feel like I'm ready to cut into my spare one and actually try it.

You guys might want to look at the tin man. He does teach classes too. I have a weld on my lip of my fender that is not much wider than a human hair. I have no idea who did the repair. Tig is more art than skill I fear.

I struggle with AL as well.

I assume everyone knows this, but make sure you don't mix you steel brush with your AL brush. Also, you are supposed to use different electrodes for AC vs DC. I'm not good enough to tell the difference in weld quality when I forget though.

This is a great party trick. Try welding two pieces of aluminum foil together. It can be done, I've seen it.

Enrolled in the best Trade School I could find in the Northeast specifically for Tig Welding. Great experience, learned a lot. All kinds of equipment, experienced teachers, and unlimited use of materials. Steel, Stainless, and Aluminum. Aluminum is the trickiest.

I really like SS and regular steel. Bought some good equipment and made some nice Furniture. Also built my dual SS exhaust, 1 piece from manifolds to tips, all welded.

Practice makes perfect.

This is why I do not do body work, I'll stick with being a monkey with a wrench.
