Labor to swap ring &pinion gears in AT LSD
Trying to work out the finances on a set of hardware swaps/etc.
For someone that knows what theyre doin, once the tranny is out, how long would it take to swap out the ring & pinion gears in an AT LSD?

Hey Jeff:
If you are installing an LSD onto your tranny, you swap only your ring gear onto the LSD. The idea is to end up with the orignal ring gear mated to your existing pinion. That involves 12 bolts and removing the end bearings with pullers. An hour or so with the right tools to do the ring gear swap. This does not include the time to remove the old diff or install/adjust the new diff after the ring gear swap.
Do you need to replace the pinion for some reason? Let's hope not. That introduces a considerable amount of time and setup issues. [EDIT: I see Brian O has provided a nice link].

Since my tranny is coming out for the TC input seal repair, and I kinda need a new rear cross member (one of the slots for alignment cam is really screwed up and missing a lot of metal)..might as well get the 2.54 gears put in "while its out".
Was trying to work out..get Anderson's $1k entire unit, or keep my existing working well tranny, and just swap in those bits..and see what the cost delta would be.
The pin & gear is $250..so Id have to see at LEAST $500 in labor just to do those gear swaps to consider the tranny swap with Anderson as a whole..
Make sense?

I would swap in the other tranny+diff unit in toto rather than fussing around with both gears and diffs. Of course, that assumes the used tranny from 928 Intl is as good as your used tranny, which it probably is. That was my experience with a used tranny from them. The setup of a ring and pinion swap is not simple or easy but I can't say if it's a budget breaker. Actually when you consider this setup and the installation of the diff, I'm sure it would be a lot more expensive to go that route. Hopefully Brian or Schocki will pipe in on this directly.

Make sure you include new bolts for the ring gear, I have seen them get a bit soft and stretchy when torqued again on a couple of them, and they are not cheap, close to 200 bucks list for the set IIRC.
It wont happen every time, but it should be considered.
As far as time, depends on if you want it put on a measuring table to make sure it is right, or just swap it out and hope for the best.
But then again, we have folks here that can do transmission conversions and full motor reseals in 2 days, shocks all the way round in a hour, intake refresh jobs in 90 minutes, so I may be the wrong guy to ask.
You will be ahead if the game most times to just buy the transmission from mark during the 1/2 price sale.

Your 88' is type A28.12 with 2.20 final drive ratio. Might be better to go with a A28.16 out of a 89', or a A28.08 with first gear starts out of a 86'.

Just get the full 89 trans with LSD from Anderson......thats the best way to go! I know a 2.54 ring-pinon will work in a 2.20 4 speed auto and actually ends up with lower gears since they slightly changed the gear ratios in 89....
